Shay has reviewed 'This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me', and she's not happy...
Ilona Andrews – the duo behind the ‘Hidden Legacy’ series and ‘Innkeeper Chronicles’ - have once again created a mesmerising world of beautiful and terrifying creatures, complex characters; some relatable and some wholly not.
Which is why it’s such a shame the plot line doesn’t hold up. I was bored, and as a blooded member of the ‘Book Devouring Horde’ (if you know, you know), that is a painful admission. Desperately anticipating this book, as I came to terms with Ilona’s decision to pause writing their other more established series’, I was severely
let down. Too much political intrigue not enough action. Maggie may be a relatable character as a fellow fantasy reader, but she lacks the fighting spirit and blood thirsty nature of Kate or Ada (some of their other leading ladies).
As someone who typically finishes a book in a day, I had to force myself to keep reading this book, until the final three chapters where it finally became interesting. Please don’t let this dissuade you from reading a writing duo I consider to be one of the greatest fantasy authors of our time, just maybe start by reading Kate Daniels...
