Over the next few days, temperatures are expected to rise, and many workers across Pembrokeshire will be doing their jobs in conditions most people would struggle to sit in, never mind work in.
Retail staff, kitchen teams, drivers, mechanics, care workers, cleaners, warehouse staff, tradespeople, hairdressers, delivery drivers, and service providers will all be trying to keep businesses running while dealing with extreme heat, busy workplaces, and demanding customers.
Some kitchens and work areas can be far hotter than the temperature outside. Staff may need extra breaks, more water, and a slightly slower pace just to stay safe.
So if service takes a little longer, please do not take it out on the person in front of you.
A delayed coffee, meal, delivery, appointment, taxi, repair, or shop queue is not worth someone becoming unwell at work.
Be patient. Be kind. Be human.
Support local businesses, but also support the people working inside them.
And for anyone lining up the usual comments about “it’s just a hot day” or “we had proper heat when we were young”, you can frankly go do one.
There is nothing clever about making smug, unhelpful comments while people are genuinely struggling in the heat. Some people are elderly, unwell, working long shifts, in hot kitchens, in vehicles, in care settings, or in workplaces with little or no cooling.
A bit of basic empathy costs nothing.
Stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for each other.
