Can I drink the first brew of tea?

Many people share the experience of pouring out the first brew of tea, often due to concerns about pesticide residue, or dust and dirt.

In the early days of tea-making, the process was relatively crude, inevitably exposing the tea to dust and contaminants. Although these contaminants pose little health risk, the older generation still retained the custom of pouring out the first brew as a necessary cleaning step. However, modern Taiwanese tea-making has advanced significantly, making this concern largely negligible. In my personal observations at tea factories, neither tea growers nor tea producers themselves pour out the first steep of tea.

The first brew of tea typically has the highest aroma and richest nutritional value. Due to the steeping characteristics of tea, the first brew is the best place to present the highest-quality aromatic compounds. Therefore, from a quality perspective, pouring out the first brew is not recommended.
