We just wanted to address the issue of wasps around our cake display, as we completely understand that it isn’t pleasant to see.

Unfortunately, at this time of year wasps are particularly attracted to sweet foods. We have contacted pest control for professional advice and are doing everything reasonably possible to reduce the problem.

We have been advised to place sweet/jam-based traps outside the premises to try to attract the wasps away from the shop, which we are doing.

Unfortunately, keeping our front door closed isn’t a practical option. It is a very heavy door and we have many elderly customers, parents with prams and customers with mobility difficulties who would struggle to open it.

We also cannot completely cover the cake display as our staff need regular access to it while serving customers. We are continuing to keep the area clean and take every reasonable precaution we can.

We sincerely apologise to anyone who has been concerned by this. We completely understand how it looks, but please be assured that we have sought professional advice and are continuing to do everything we can to manage the problem.

We are looking for a reliable Driver / Picker Packer to join our team for evening shifts, working 6pm–12am Monday to Friday plus Sunday evenings.

The role involves order picking, packing, and deliveries, so good numeracy skills and attention to detail are essential.

Applicants must be over 30 years old and have a clean license for van insurance purposes and must have their own transport to and from work. A hardworking attitude and reliability are a must.

Just to clarify our process regarding trial shifts and avoid any misunderstanding:

Due to the high level of interest we receive for vacancies, particularly at weekends, applicants are invited to attend a short 1–2 hour supervised trial alongside a member of staff. This is communicated clearly in advance, including the fact that the trial period is unpaid, so there is complete transparency before anyone attends.

The purpose of this session is not simply to assess applicants, but also to allow them to gain a clear understanding of the role, the working environment, and the expectations involved. From the outside, the role can appear to be straightforward customer service; however, there are many additional responsibilities involved that are not immediately visible to customers visiting the shop.

Throughout the trial, applicants remain fully supervised by an experienced member of staff, are shown around the premises, and have the role explained to them in detail. This approach is intended to ensure that individuals, particularly younger applicants or those with limited work experience, are not placed into a full shift unexpectedly or made to feel overwhelmed.

Where both the applicantt and management are satisfied following the supervised trial, individuals are then invited back for a full paid shift and formally added to payroll, as has been the case with our recent new starters this week and over the weekend.

The process is carried out with the intention of providing a supportive introduction to the role while ensuring suitability and comfort for both the applicant and the business.
