Oakington Garden Centre

Oakington Garden Centre Oakington Garden Centre & Olive Tree Café, an independent traditional garden centre and café We offer a delivery service, which is free for larger orders.

Oakington Garden Centre is Independent and family run and you can see the difference. From the canopied entrance area with it’s colourful seasonal displays to the spacious attractively laid out stock beds, the focus is on plants. The owners and plant area team are horticulturists, designers and keen gardeners, so you benefit from friendly, informed advice from enthusiasts. We source many plants fr

om national and international specialists to ensure quality, competitive prices and the availability of recent introductions, but also buy extensively from local nurseries so that you get plants grown in similar conditions to those in your garden. We offer a warm welcome for all gardeners from beginner to plantsman or professional. We carry a wide range of trees, shrubs, fruit, perennials, climbers and roses, with seasonal offerings such as seed potatoes, winter and summer vegetables, bedding plants, wallflowers, soft fruit, bare root hedging, turf and bulbs. A number of local designers, landscapers and gardeners use us, and we can suggest people to carry out your garden construction and planting to a good standard. Our plant manager is happy to try to source specific plants for customer requests, or to put together an order to fulfil a designer planting scheme. The shop and outside display areas hold supplies of tools, pots, stoneware, trellis and timber products and a range of seeds, composts, chemicals, bird care products and sundries to provide all the essential for successful gardening. There is ample parking in the newly landscaped car park and the site is accessible to wheelchairs, with disabled parking. The Olive Tree Café

The Ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible. Our coffee is a rich Italian blend that was specially chosen by us from The Cambridge Coffee Company. Now in our third year of operating we have made a name for ourselves in the local community, providing a venue for private events and an informal meeting place for groups such as the Girton Knitting Society. The Café offers a range of delicious homemade food lovingly prepared in our kitchen. The menu changes with the seasons throughout the year but always includes cakes, biscuits and sweet treats as well as light lunches and a tempting breakfast menu. With both indoor and outdoor seating (clustered around our majestic olive tree) the café itself is a spacious and inviting environment with a modern yet relaxed feel. Our menu also reflects this atmosphere, packed with traditional favourites plus a few Mediterranean twists!

We're delighted to have received an award for most improved garden centre in the East of England!

Each year the Garden Centre Association (GCA) inspects garden centres across the country, making sure they meet the high standards needed to be part of the GCA.

Our marks go up against similar sized garden centres (local garden centre) in the East of England. We're very proud to also come second and third in a few other categories, here's the rundown:

1st place: The Dick Allen Award for Most Improved Garden Centre

2nd place: Plantaria

2nd place: Ian Boardman Award for Best Indoor
Plant Retailer

3rd place: Garden Centre of the Year

3rd place: The Award for Catering Excellence for Best Garden Centre Restaurant

During the temporary hosepipe ban, there are lots of ways that you can save water and still look after your plants! Remember you can still use tap water with a watering can. Here are some great tips from our Plant Team...

🌸 After washing up, tip your waste water under thirsty plants like hydrangeas.

🌸 Water purposefully, aim directly over the root area of each plant, not on foliage.

🌸 Move pot plants together in clusters, to a shady spot, and add a tray underneath to catch excess run-off.

🌸 Add a layer of mulch, such as bark chippings, after watering to lock in moisture and keep the soil cool.

🌸 Water in the evening to reduce evaporation.

🌸 Future-proof your garden: install a water butt to collect rainwater.

🌸 Choose more resilient plants that can cope with extreme weather. Our Prarie Garden is full of fantastic suggestions of super drought resistant plants...

It's another hot week, so remember to water any new plants. Even plants planted last year would benefit from a good water. Make sure to drench the soil so the water runs deep down to the roots 💦
