Meet the legend himself, our Sous Chef Jose, originally from Barcelona and with over 30 years’ of experience in hospitality, he has been a vital part of the La Zenia journey so far. 🧡
Not only has he helped us maintain the highest standards in our food alongside Mustapha, but he has also given so much of himself. Keeping team spirits high, offering calm guidance when it’s been needed most, and doing so consistently and selflessly. I know we speak on behalf of the entire team when we say, muchas gracias POR TODO. 🥰
We recently sat down for a chat with him about everything from La Zenia, his career, his passion for tapas, and of course, his home, Spain. 🇪🇸
When did you join La Zenia and what made you want to join the team?
“ I joined La Zenia when it opened in September 2024. After many years in the industry, I was looking for a project from the beginning, where I could contribute my experience and help build something strong.”
Can you tell us a little about your career as a chef so far and why you have continuously chosen the industry for so many years?
“I’ve been working as a chef for around 30 years. During that time, I’ve worked in different types of kitchens, which has given me a solid foundation and a broad understanding of the profession.
I’ve stayed in this industry because it constantly challenges you. There is always something new to learn, and that keeps it interesting.”
Where does your passion for the kitchen come from and what is your favourite thing about being a chef?
“My passion comes from years of experience and a deep respect for the product. Over time, you develop a real appreciation for ingredients and for doing things properly.”
If you could recommend one thing for someone visiting your hometown of Barcelona, what would it be?
“If someone visits Barcelona, I would definitely recommend going to Mercado de La Boqueria. For me, it’s the heart of the city’s food culture.”
What is your favourite thing about working at La Zenia?
“Working in the team is really fun and we all feel like one big family. I enjoy maintaining a high standard in the kitchen and working with the really strong team we have here.”
