Always Learning ❤️

It’s one of our three values at Social Moments, and it doesn’t just apply to our programmes. It applies to how we lead and develop our organisation too.

This week our CEO, Chantelle, spent time alongside other charity leaders as part of an Action Learning Set facilitated by Rebecca White .

These sessions create space to step away from day-to-day delivery, explore real challenges, ask better questions, learn from the experiences of others and take practical ideas back into our organisations.

For a small charity, opportunities like this are incredibly valuable.

Investing time in leadership, governance and learning helps us build a stronger organisation behind the scenes, so that we can continue creating welcoming, sustainable services for the families and communities we work alongside.

A huge thank you to Rebecca for creating such an engaging and trusted space for learning, and to the brilliant leaders in this group for sharing their experiences so openly.

Friday roundup 💙🩷

It feels like everything is properly back in motion at Social Moments this week!

Early Explorers is back, our regular Social Shop hours are back, our volunteers are back in force, we’ve had extra food donations coming through AND lots has been happening behind the scenes. 🙌

We’ve had meetings almost every day, two days of training, funding applications going in and lots of conversations about how we make each of our projects stronger and continue developing what we offer our community.

A highlight this week was welcoming Simon Prince, East of England Network Coordinator for Feeding Britain, to our Rackheath studio to catch up with us all. ❤️

We talked about what we’re seeing locally, how we can share our data and insight with Feeding Britain to help build a picture of what’s happening across Norfolk, and how that connects into what’s happening nationally.

We also talked about what else we could bring into our studio, the services we could connect our members with and how Simon can help us build some of those partnerships.

Food might be what brings someone through our doors, but the opportunity to connect, support and build community goes so much further than that. ❤️

I’m so slack on Socials and I do apologise!

💙 FRIDAY ROUNDUP: AUGUST 💙

Sometimes we become so busy doing the work that we forget to stop, look back and talk about what has actually been achieved.

Today, I have, and our August figures have completely blown me away 💙

Throughout August:

💙 Families shopped with us 194 times
💙 1,055 food items were offered completely free
💙 An estimated 3.76 tonnes of food was rescued and redistributed, which is the equivalent in weight of almost 9,000 meals

August was also a very personal month for me. It was my first summer navigating a new family routine with my boys, and most weeks I was trying to squeeze everything into Mondays and Tuesdays before spending the rest of the week with them or heading out to serve waffles at events!

For Social Moments to keep running, I had to trust the people around me. And they were absolutely incredible.

A huge thank you to Nakita for taking ownership, holding everything together and making sure our Social Shop continued to run while Sophie was also off for the summer and I wasn’t able to be there as much.

And thank you to every one of our wonderful volunteers who turned up each Monday and Wednesday to collect and sort food, stock the shelves, welcome our members and make the shop feel like the warm, dignified community space we created it to be.

Our data shows that 86% of the members whose details are recorded are families, mostly with one or two children of primary or secondary school age.

That feels particularly special to me because when I created Social Moments, I was a mum with two children at primary school. I knew how relentless family life could feel, not only when facing a crisis, but when life was simply busy, your head was full and everything felt like a lot.

Behind every statistic is a real family, a real conversation and a real moment of connection 💙

That is the bit that matters most.

Thank you to our team, volunteers, donors, partners and every family who continues to support and shape Social Moments.

📣 BANK HOLIDAY SOCIAL SHOP UPDATE

A little change to our opening days next week 💗

Our Social Shop will be CLOSED this Bank Holiday Monday (31st August) as our surplus food collections and deliveries will be arriving a little later than usual.

But don’t worry — we’ll still be opening twice next week, with our first Social Shop moving to:

🛍️ TUESDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER
⏰ 11am–1pm

We’ll be out collecting and getting everything ready so there’s plenty for you to come in and shop from. ♻️💗

Our second opening day will continue as planned on Wednesday 2nd September, opening at 11am.

Please share with anyone who usually visits us on a Monday so they know about the change.

Sometimes you need to stop long enough to actually think about where you’re going.

Our Founder, Chantelle, recently completed the six-month Momentum Leadership Programme, delivered by Ripple Acts through FUSE Network CIC and it was honestly unlike any leadership programme.

‘Rather than focusing on how to do more, be more productive or squeeze even more into an already busy working week, Momentum gave me something much more valuable:

Space to stop and think about who I am as a leader and as a human.

To think about my values, what gives me energy, what drains it, what really matters in my work and, importantly…

What am I actually here to do?

When you work in the charity and community sector, it’s so easy to get caught in the day-to-day. Funding pressures, growing demand, never-ending to-do lists and constantly wanting to do more for the people around you.

Having dedicated time once a month to step away from that and reflect was incredibly valuable.

There was breathwork, brilliant conversations, connections with other local leaders, lots of thinking, plenty of laughs and, importantly, excellent snacks. 😂

A massive thank you to Louise, Verena and the Ripple Acts team, Fuse Network, Norwich Unity Hub and Carrow House for creating and holding that space. ❤️

Leadership development doesn’t always need to be about learning how to do more.

Sometimes it’s about having the space to remember who you are, what matters to you and why you’re doing it in the first place.

💜 From a vision… to a thriving community space.

A huge thank you to the Norfolk Community Foundation and the Love Norfolk Fund for believing in our vision and helping us transform our Community Studio.

Your funding has enabled us to install our large chilled display cabinet, lease our coffee machine, install an external power supply for our catering trailer, and create a welcoming cafe area where people can pause, chat and feel part of something.

The impact has been so much more than we imagined.

☕ Our volunteers now start the week every Monday together over a cup of coffee while preparing around 500kg of surplus food for our community.

🥣 Families have stayed after shopping to enjoy homemade soup and meals created from surplus food, giving people the confidence to try ingredients they may never have chosen before.

🚚 Our catering trailer operated outside the studio, creating affordable food options alongside new work experience and barista training opportunities in partnership with Green Farm Coffee

🤝 We’ve welcomed representatives from BroadlandDCouncil , local Health & Wellbeing partners and our local MP, Jerome Mayhew , who have all taken the time to sit with our members and volunteers to understand the impact this space is having.

When we applied for this funding, we supported 117 households.

Today, we’re supporting more than 210 households, that’s over 600 people weekly.

That growth is about much more than numbers. It reflects a community that knows there is somewhere they are welcomed, listened to and valued.

To everyone at the Norfolk Community Foundation and the Love Norfolk Fund; Thank you for helping us create a space where people don’t just come to shop.

They come to connect, belong and thrive. 💜

We’re incredibly proud to share that our Social Shop at Holy Trinity Church, Rackheath has been awarded a 5-star Food Hygiene Rating! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This achievement doesn’t happen by chance. It reflects the care, commitment and high standards shown by our amazing team every single week.

A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteer Karen, who works tirelessly behind the scenes in our kitchen, and to our brilliant Youth Ambassador, Liv, who continues to grow in confidence while playing such an important role in helping our projects run smoothly.

From food safety and preparation to welcoming families with a smile, every volunteer and team member plays a part in creating spaces that people can trust.

We’re so proud of everything they’ve achieved and grateful for the time, passion and kindness they bring to Social Moments.

🍣 To celebrate World Sushi Day tomorrow! 🍣

Our Tasty Bites cooking workshop is all about trying something new! 🌈

We’ll be rolling up our sleeves (and our sushi! 😉) as the children make their own colourful sushi rolls from scratch.

At Social Moments, our cooking workshops aren’t just about making food they’re about building confidence, encouraging children to explore new flavours, and having lots of fun along the way.

Who knows… we might even have a few future sushi chefs in the making! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳
