Home of iconic themed Afternoon Teas, decadent bedrooms, unforgettable weddings and glittering events. The Assembly House is a gorgeous Georgian gem perfectly located in the heart of Norwich. Designed by architect Thomas Ivory in 1754, the Grade-I listed House is famous for its historic elegance, glittering celebrations, beautiful bedrooms and legendary Afternoon Teas. "...The Assembly House, one

of the UK’s loveliest boutique hotels, offers a storming afternoon tea..." TV presenter and journalist Grace Dent, writing in The Guardian newspaper

We set out to create the kind of establishment we'd love to find in one of the UK's most beautiful cities, one where old-fashioned hospitality is valued, food is delicious and where beautiful surroundings can be found hidden around every corner. Our characterful bedrooms are like jewellery boxes, each one different, many filled with genuine antiques, some with gardens, some their own balconies, all boasting a generous sprinkle of glamour and magic. With a restaurant that opens daily for breakfast and Beforenoon Tea, lunch or one of our famous themed Afternoon Teas, menus are by director and renowned Norfolk chef Richard Hughes. The House hosts stunning weddings, impressive events, standout conferences and is the home of The Richard Hughes Cookery School, the inaugural winner of The British Cookery School of the Year. Come and immerse yourself in the world of The Assembly House: we can't wait for you to be our guests!

💔💔
Two years ago today, we lost Richard: a wonderful father, grandfather, husband, brother, friend and forever The Assembly House boss.
If two years sounds like such a long time, it isn't: we haven't had a single day without missing him dreadfully, not a single one.
But Richard left us so much more than memories.
He left us recipes and ideas, standards he refused to compromise on, an extraordinary belief in hospitality and a very clear understanding that you look after people properly.
You make them feel welcome, you feed them well, you remember their faces, you make them smile.
He left us staff he loved, many of whom still carry his lessons with them every day.
He taught us that the smallest details matter, that good enough isn't good enough, that you should always find a way, that a business is nothing without its people.
So much of what we do here still carries his fingerprints: it might be a menu or something one of the team says or a decision made because we can almost hear him telling us what he would do.
And sometimes it's simply the feeling of this House, full of people, food, laughter, love and life.
That is his legacy.
Still.
Always.
We miss him so terribly, but how lucky are we to have been loved by him, taught by him, to have worked alongside him and been given the privilege of carrying on the things he cared so much about.
Two years, Richard. We love you. We know you're right here beside us ❤️❤️❤️

👑✨ THERE'S JUST ONE WEEK LEFT OF CINDERELLA AFTERNOON TEA! ✨👑

Midnight is approaching.
Not metaphorically, not in a mysterious “perhaps we should probably book this soon” sort of way, ACTUAL CINDERELLA AFTERNOON TEA IS DISAPPEARING IN ONE WEEK.
After that, the pumpkins go back to being pumpkins, the glass carriages return to wherever glass carriages live and Cinderella has to get back to doing whatever Cinderella does between fairytales.
For one more week, though, you can step through the doors of The Assembly House and into our rather splendid version of the story.
✨ Magic
👠 Tiny glass slippers
🎃 Pumpkins
🪄 Fairytale details
🐭 Sugar mice
And, of course, a full Afternoon Tea served in our beautiful Georgian rooms.
It has been an absolute fairytale of a tea, but September 6 is the final stroke of midnight and then Cinderella is gone.
So if you've been saying “we'll book it, we'll book it…” while somehow not actually booking it...THIS IS YOUR FAIRY GODMOTHER MOMENT.
Grab your best friend, your little princess or prince, your favourite fellow cake enthusiast or simply someone who deserves to be transported somewhere lovely for an afternoon.
Because you've only got ONE WEEK LEFT to live happily ever after 👑✨ Book your table before the magic disappears: www.assemblyhousenorwich.co.uk/afternoon-tea/menus

🎄✨ NORWICH, PREPARE TO WREATH YOURSELF IN GLORY ✨🎄

There are people who like Christmas, there are people who love Christmas and then there is Caroline from La Belle Flowers, who approaches Christmas as though she has personally declared war on undecorated doors.
She is back at The Assembly House for another round of her legendary Christmas wreath-making workshops and frankly, we think it's time you got involved.
Because why buy a wreath when you could spend an afternoon or evening making one yourself, drinking mulled w**e and gradually discovering that you have stronger opinions about foliage than you ever thought possible?
Come and spend a gloriously festive few hours creating your own beautiful Christmas wreath under Caroline's expert guidance.
You'll get:
🎄 Everything you need to make your own beautiful, natural wreath
✨ Expert tuition from Caroline
🍷 A festive drink on arrival, because creative decisions are always improved by mulled w**e
🍽️ A festive buffet, because wreath-making is surprisingly hungry work
🎁 And, at the end of it all, your very own handmade wreath to take home and hang on your door like the terrifyingly organised Christmas person you have now become.
And don't worry if you're not “crafty”, neither are most people when they arrive.
By the end, however, you will be standing there covered in leaves, feeling inexplicably proud of yourself and saying things like: “I think I might put another bit of evergreen here.”
This is how it starts: soon you'll be foraging, then you'll own secateurs, then people will start asking you to make their wreaths. It's a slippery slope, just ask Caroline.
🎄 CHRISTMAS WREATH-MAKING AT THE ASSEMBLY HOUSE
📅 November 23, 24, 30; December 7, 8
⏰ 2.30pm and 6pm
💷 £75 per person
Find all details and how to book here: www.assemblyhousenorwich.co.uk/events
Spaces are limited and these workshops are always hugely popular, so don't leave it until December and then discover that everyone else has already got their wreath sorted and you're standing outside a garden centre at 8.57am hoping they've got one left.
Come and make something beautiful instead. Christmas ALWAYS starts here 🎄✨
P.S. The enormous wreath on our front door remains strictly outside the remit of the workshop. If you manage to make one that size, however, we'd quite like to see the door you intend to hang it on.

🍫🍫 THIS IS A CHOCOLATE CREAM TEA WELFARE CHECK 🍫🍫

Just checking in: are you eating enough chocolate? Are you drinking enough hot chocolate? Are you putting enough things on top of scones?

No? Then we need to talk.

Alongside our glorious Afternoon Teas, Cheese Teas and Beforenoon Teas, we offer the Chocolate Cream Tea: proof that, occasionally, life gets it absolutely right.

Two warm, triple chocolate scones, packed with dark and white chocolate chips, served with Nutella and clotted cream, accompanied by a homemade hot chocolate with hazelnut syrup, fresh cream and absolutely no interest whatsoever in your ability to resist it.

🍫 CHOCOLATE CREAM TEA | £10.95

It is essentially a hug, but edible and drinkable and covered in cream.

You can enjoy it in our garden, preferably somewhere sunny, while pretending that chocolate is an entirely reasonable response to whatever the week has thrown at you.

Bad day? Chocolate scone.
Good day? Chocolate scone.
No particular day? Frankly, even better.

Sometimes there isn't time for a proper Afternoon Tea and you just want to walk-in to our Grand Hall and enjoy a chocolate-based activity you have planned.

We can adapt our plain and cheese scones for vegan and gluten-free guests, although sadly our triple chocolate scones aren't suitable for vegan or dairy-free diets.

And there was you thinking we were perfect. Almost, just not quite.

🎃🧹 THERE'S SOMETHING BREWING... 🧹🎃

There have been whispers, there have been meetings.
There have been things being said in the pastry kitchen that, when taken out of context, could probably result in a police investigation.
Because The Assembly House of Horrors is coming back.
And this year is rather special because it is the TENTH Assembly House of Horrors Afternoon Tea.
TEN YEARS of turning perfectly respectable Afternoon Tea into something that would probably concern your grandmother.
It returns 17 to 31 October and if history is anything to go by, it will disappear faster than a witch's broomstick at closing time.
🎃 BOOK HERE: www.assemblyhousenorwich.co.uk/afternoon-tea/menus
So what are we doing this year? I'm not telling you yet.
The cauldron is bubbling, the pastry team are sharpening their fangs, the decorators are making ominous trips into storage.
One thing I can tell you is that the toad is coming back.
He has become something of a Halloween celebrity around here and, frankly, after nine years of service, we wouldn't dare tell him he's not invited.
Whether he returns in his traditional form or has undergone a dramatic seasonal transformation is currently classified information.
And that's not all.
Alongside our famously bonkers Halloween Afternoon Tea, we're plotting the return of our Halloween Night Mini Market, plus theatrical treats, suitably sinister surprises and quite possibly several things that should never be described as “cute” under any circumstances.
As for the photographs and the full menu...they'll be coming very soon.
Our photographer is currently in Italy.
I have tried explaining that “TENTH ANNIVERSARY HAUNTED AFTERNOON TEA” is an entirely reasonable reason to abandon an Italian holiday.
Apparently, the phrase “there's a possessed Battenberg in the studio” wasn't persuasive enough.
Honestly.
🎃 17–31 OCTOBER, The House of Horrors returns and 10 years in, we're really rather good at this.
Watch this space: something wicked this way comes...🧹🎃

🍁✨ AUTUMN EXPECTATION VS AUTUMN REALITY ✨🍁

What we think autumn will be like…
A magical season of crisp, frosty mornings and golden afternoons.
The trees become a breathtaking kaleidoscope of red, orange and gold, the air smells of apples and woodsmoke, leaves crunch satisfyingly underfoot, acorns gently plop from trees.
Somewhere in the distance, a perfectly Instagrammable bonfire crackles away.
You wear chunky knits, you drink something called a spiced apple latte, you look windswept but in a very attractive way.
Basically, you’ve wandered out of a lifestyle magazine and into a woodland cottage where everyone owns a tasteful throw.
What autumn actually is…
Raining, dark at 3pm, the neighbour has apparently decided to dispose of half a wardrobe by setting fire to it and wet leaves have been trampled into the kitchen and are now functioning as nature’s own lino.
Your shoes are damp.
Your socks are damp.
Your soul is damp.
You put on your chunky knit and discover it smells faintly of the dog.
And somehow, despite having spent 20 minutes lighting candles to create an autumnal atmosphere, the house still smells like a damp cupboard in a pub.
✨ BUT THERE IS ANOTHER WAY ✨
Come to The Assembly House, where autumn is exactly as you imagined it.
No mud, no soggy jeans, no leaves stuck to your shoes, no standing in a field wondering why you thought an outdoor fire was a good idea.
Instead, there’s a blackberry Gateau Opera, an Apple Betty Shot dessert, a salted caramel chocolate flame, a last of the summer raspberries target, a ginger loaf and 🥳 Alfie the Acorn , our cinnamon crunch biscuit buddy.
All the autumn magic with none of the dreary weather.
🍁 From September 7 to October 17, with one final spark from November 1 to 13, Autumn Whimsy Afternoon Tea will be here to make autumn considerably more enjoyable than it has any right to be.
Because frankly, if we're going to spend the next few months being cold, wet and slightly concerned about the heating bill, we might as well have cake.

🐟🌊 A LITTLE AFTERNOON SEA LOVE 🌊🐟

I could sit here for the next three hours telling you how brilliant Afternoon Sea is.
I could tell you about the three tiers, the fishcakes, the Cromer crab rarebit, the smoked mackerel pâté, the prawns, the smoked salmon, the tiny chocolate sardines and the magic fortune fish 🐟🔮
I could tell you that our chefs work ridiculously hard to make it delicious, that our front of house team work ridiculously hard to make you feel looked after, and that we think it’s a rather wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
But then you’d probably quite reasonably think: “well, you would say that.”
So I’m not going to - these aren’t my words, these are somebody else’s ❤️
A lovely gentleman emailed us a couple of days ago after visiting to enjoy Afternoon Sea with his wife, and we were genuinely overjoyed to read this:
“Today myself and my wife had the superb Afternoon Seas in your restaurant. It was the best Afternoon Tea we have ever had and totally unique, so thank you but also a massive thank you to the young man Sam who served us. He was polite, helpful, attentive and a perfect example of exactly how you should be to deliver excellent customer service. So thanks to your marvellous chefs and to Sam, we will definitely see you again.”
Honestly, this is the stuff that makes us very, very happy 🥹
So thank you to the gentleman who sent this. Thank you for choosing us, thank you for taking the time to write and thank you particularly for mentioning Sam.
We LOVE hearing when one of our team has looked after you brilliantly: please, please tell us, tell their manager, tell us in an email, tell us on a review, tell us when you’re leaving.
For some of our team, hospitality is their first ever job.
Being told by a customer that you’ve done a brilliant job, that you’ve made them feel welcome and looked after, can be an enormous confidence boost.
And for the people who have been with us for many, many years, it matters just as much: it’s lovely to be reminded that after all those years, you’re still doing brilliantly.
We genuinely make a point of passing those lovely comments on because our people work incredibly hard and they deserve to know when it’s noticed ❤️
Anyway, if you fancy topping up your vitamin sea, come and have a fishy little feast beneath the chandeliers. We promise not to make you swim for it.

👑✨ Running out of ideas to entertain the children? ✨👑

Feeling as though your summer job description has quietly expanded to include chauffeur, live-in chef, housekeeper, ATM, laundry operative, finder of lost water bottles and unpaid Redcoat?
Yes. Us too.
The good news is there's just over a week left of the school holidays, which means there's still time for one final adventure before your search history becomes: "can children legally attend school wearing trainers?"
May we humbly suggest Cinderella Afternoon Tea?
Because after six weeks of negotiating over sun cream, screen time and whose turn it is to feed the guinea pig, you deserve someone else to do the cooking.
The children can enjoy fairy tales, cakes and milkshakes, you can enjoy not washing up.
If you're feeling particularly celebratory, there are cocktails (for the grown-ups, before anyone writes in, we're not monsters).
There are really only two ways to look at the approaching return to school:
✨ You're cherishing these precious final days together, blinking back a tear of sadness because the summer has gone so quickly
✨ ...or you're blinking back a tear of joy because, in just over a week's time, somebody else will be asking them to put their shoes on.
We're not here to judge, we're here to provide cake.
Cinderella Afternoon Tea runs until 6 September, after which the glass slipper quietly returns to the cupboard and the pumpkins resume normal duties.
Book your table here www.assemblyhousenorwich.co.uk/afternoon-tea/menus before the clock strikes...well...before all the tables disappear. Which, if previous years are anything to go by, may be considerably earlier than midnight.

🥂 Let’s talk about the Great Bank Holiday Monday Night-Out Loophole 🥂

Because technically, you might have work on Tuesday morning, but we're imagining not all of you have work at 7am.

And if you’re going to be honest with yourself, one hour of annual leave is a very small price to pay for extending the weekend by an entire evening 😏

So why not stay? We currently have rooms 4, 5, 6, 7, 14, 15 and 16 available for our £215 Tea, Fizz, Stay and Breakfast deal on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31.

Come to Norwich. Check into The Assembly House, put your bags down, have a drink, have afternoon tea, go out for dinner, see a show, wander around the city, or simply settle into your beautiful room and enjoy the rare luxury of having nowhere else to be.

No driving home, no trying to find someone to stay sober, no waking up at home thinking, “why didn't we just stay?”

And on Tuesday morning? You could have a leisurely breakfast and be at work an hour later than usual.

That's not irresponsible: that's strategic use of annual leave.
