🏆 CUP MAGIC AT AYCLIFFE! WHAT A COMEBACK! ⚽️👊🩵🏆
Today was a huge day for Newton Aycliffe Juniors FC Seniors as we welcomed Hebburn Jordans FC for our first-ever appearance in the Durham County Sunday Cup.
We knew it was going to be a tough afternoon. With injuries, players moving on to pastures new and numbers stretched to the absolute limit, we were down to the bare bones. But the lads who turned up were committed, determined and ready to give everything for the badge.
We started with just ten men but, to our credit, controlled the opening ten minutes and looked comfortable on the ball. Unfortunately, a strike from the edge of the box found its way into the net, putting us 1–0 down.
With Damo watching from the sidelines despite being injured, he bravely pulled a kit on and came on to give us an extra body. Andrew Burrows then arrived to help us get back to a fit eleven. However, within a minute of having a full team available, we gave the ball away cheaply and Hebburn punished us with another strike from the edge of the box. Suddenly, we were 2–0 down.
But the Juniors weren’t having any of it.
We continued to play our football, moving the ball around nicely and creating opportunities. It was a physical encounter, but that didn’t stop us. We kept pushing, with Sam Beattie causing all sorts of problems down the left and giving their right-back a torrid time — eventually earning him a booking.
Despite having no substitutes available, the lads dug deep, battled for every ball and kept believing. We dominated possession, got closer and closer, and began to put Hebburn under real pressure. Some excellent set pieces brought us close, while at the other end we restricted them to efforts from distance, with very little to trouble us.
Then came the breakthrough!
After one of our lads was fouled on the edge of the box, Sam Beattie stepped up to take the penalty. Cool, calm and composed, he stroked it home to make it 2–1. Game on!
The belief was there for all to see, and we continued to push after the break. The equaliser arrived when Andrew Burrows cut inside from his midfield position and unleashed a beauty into the bottom corner. 2–2! The comeback was on.
And we weren’t finished there.
With the Juniors continuing to test their defensive line, Curtis Layfield swung a ball in from the corner of the box. It took a deflection off a Hebburn player and found its way into the net. Curtis is claiming it, so we’re giving him it! 😂
3–2 TO AYCLIFFE!
With around 15 minutes remaining, it was time to dig even deeper. Hebburn had around seven substitutes available; we had none. But our lads stood firm, kept the ball, worked for each other and showed incredible determination to see the game out.
Despite the physical challenges and everything thrown at them, the lads held their nerve and got the job done.

From 0–2 down, with ten men at kick-off, no substitutes and everything stacked against us, the Seniors produced an absolutely immense performance to book our place in the second round of the Durham County Sunday Cup.
A massive well done to every single player who turned up today and gave everything for this club. Damo deserves a special mention for coming on injured to help the team, and every one of the lads showed exactly what commitment to the badge looks like.
We’re incredibly proud of you all. Days like today remind us what this club is all about. When we dig deep, work together and believe, we can give anyone a game.
