There are a few weeks of the summer holidays left, and Pembrokeshire wears them well. The beaches are still warm, the evenings are still long, and the pub in the middle of Newport is still doing what it's always done.

Come down before September gets any ideas!

Something a bit different in the sky tonight.

The moon's passing in front of the sun this evening, and Newport happens to be one of the best spots in Britain to see it. Around 94% covered at its peak, just after seven, low over the water to the west.

We'll be open, obviously. Pint in hand, proper eclipse glasses on (not sunglasses, they don't count), and the best view in Pembrokeshire from the doorstep.

Last one like this was 1999. Worth stepping outside for.

Every summer it's the same, and that's rather the point.

The town fills up, the beach does its thing, and somewhere mid afternoon a small sandy person announces they're starving. Fish and chips fixes that. Crisp batter, proper chips, a bench in the sun if you're quick and a table inside if you're not. We're the pub in the middle of Newport, a short walk from the sand, and we've been feeding hungry summers here for a very long time.

This one's no different. That's the nicest thing about it

Twenty past eleven. The coast path's been busy since ten, but down here it's still quiet. Garden tables wiped down, white wine going in the fridge, dog bowls filled and set out. Another forty minutes of calm, then doors at twelve.
