Today, on the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings, I want to remember my grandfather, Charles Arthur Stephen Higgs, who passed away in December 2014 at the age of 92.

Born in November 1922, Charlie served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and took part in one of the most significant operations in modern history — the Normandy campaign.

He served aboard HMS Swift (G46) during Operation Neptune, the naval component of D-Day. Just weeks after the landings, on 24 June 1944, HMS Swift struck a German mine off Sword Beach and sank in the English Channel. The explosion was devastating, and 53 members of her crew lost their lives.

My grandfather was one of the survivors.

Like many of his generation, he rarely spoke about the hardships he endured during the war. Yet his survival of the sinking of HMS Swift, and his service throughout the conflict, stand as a testament to the courage, resilience and sacrifice of those who served.

As we remember the men who landed on the beaches of Normandy 82 years ago, I also remember my grandfather and the shipmates he lost aboard HMS Swift. Their service and sacrifice should never be forgotten.
