We’ve had another wonderful week of staff lunches as part of our 21 Hospitality Staff Lunch World Cup 2026.

We now have our final four, who will go head to head in the semi-finals. To borrow from Sir Alex Ferguson, it’s squeaky bum time.

Keep swiping to see what we’ve enjoyed since our last update and do your best not to get jealous. Staff lunch at 21 has become the hottest ticket in town.

Thanks again to our friends at Caterite Food & Wineservice, whose support has made all this possible.

France 🇫🇷 - Matthew

Matthew’s France menu was exactly the sort of lunch that makes the room go quiet for a moment.

Bavette Steak with Sauce au Poivre, Provençal Fish Stew and French Onion Soup.

Three classics, each with its own sense of place. The bavette brought the bistro feel, with pepper sauce doing what pepper sauce does best. The Provençal fish stew gave us the south of France in a bowl, with seafood, tomato, herbs and Mediterranean warmth.

Then French Onion Soup, a dish with roots in the markets and kitchens of Paris, built on slow-cooked onions, stock and bread. Humble ingredients, treated with patience, becoming something much greater than the sum of their parts.

A confident French menu and a reminder that the classics are classics for a reason.

Brazil 🇧🇷 - Lucy

Lucy took Brazil and gave us the sort of lunch that felt ready for a celebration.

Brazilian Pizza, Coxinhas, Garlic Butter Steak with Sweetcorn and Black Bean Salad, then Brigadeiro for something sweet.

The pizza nodded to the Italian immigrants who helped shape Brazil’s food culture in the late 1800s, while the coxinhas brought one of the country’s great street food staples to the table. Shaped like a little chicken drumstick, they’ve been enjoyed across Brazil for more than a century.

Then came steak, garlic butter and a bright salad, picking up on Brazil’s love of grilled meat and the churrasco traditions of the south, where gaúchos cooked beef over open flames.

Big flavours, lots of colour and, judging by the plates, very little left behind.

Austria 🇦🇹 - Beth

Beth’s Austria menu came with all the right Alpine comfort.

Wiener Schnitzel, Käsespätzle, Austrian Cucumber Salad and Sachertorte.

We’ve a little room before kick-off this Saturday.

Our new Saturday rhythm means we’re open from 12 noon right through, with no afternoon pause. Whether it’s a long lunch that rolls into the afternoon or an early supper before England take on Norway, we’ll have a table waiting.

After recovering from England’s eventual 🤨 win, we thought it was a good opportunity to catch you up with how our own World Cup is getting on.

Week 2 concludes the group stages, which means we’re now heading into the knockouts.

A reminder of the rules: everyone at staff lunch gives a score out of ten based on how much they enjoyed it, whether they’d be prepared to pay for it and whether they’d choose to eat it if they were visiting the country it came from.

Once again, a huge thank you to our wonderful sponsor Caterite Food & Wineservice 🙏

Here’s how week two played out…

Dylan represented Iran with a spread that looked every bit as generous as it needed to be.

Rice, richly spiced stews, salads and plenty of herbs. Iranian cooking has a long history of balance: sweet, sour, fragrant, savoury and always made for sharing.

A very good score and a very full staff table.

Score: 9/10

Lucy’s Turkey menu came out fighting.

Lahmacun, Adana Kebab with Cacık, Hummus, Ezme Salad and Turkish Rice.

Lamb, flatbread, yoghurt, spice and a table full of things to pass around. Turkish food is built on generosity and hospitality, so it felt very much at home at staff lunch.

A strong contender.

Score: 9/10

Matthew drew Portugal and gave us Smoked Trout with Chickpeas, Grilled Octopus Salad, Garlic Chilli Crevettes and Portuguese Smashed Potatoes.

Seafood, garlic, chilli, potatoes and good olive oil. Very hard to argue with.

A lunch that felt properly coastal and a score that keeps Portugal looking dangerous as we head into the knockouts.

Score: 9/10

Isla cooked for Sweden serving up Meatballs, Hasselback Potatoes, Potato Dumplings and Prawn Canapés.

Hasselback Potatoes are one of Sweden’s great gifts to the world: crisp edges, soft centres and very little chance of leftovers.

A comforting, clever lunch and a strong serving in the groups.

Score: 8/10

Ethan took Germany and went big with Bavarian Crispy Pork Knuckle and Frankfurter.

A hearty plate, built around two very familiar German favourites, with plenty of pork, beans and mustard on the side.

It was filling, comforting and very much committed to the brief.

The judges, however, proved hard to please.

Score: 6/10

There was a time when no summer at 21 felt complete without a Knickerbocker Glory.

Since reopening after lockdown, we thought our wonderful customers had had their fill. We were clearly wrong. The lobbying has prevailed.

This week’s heatwave feels like the perfect occasion for its long-awaited return.

The pastry team were first in the queue…

Knickerbocker Glory - Strawberry Ice Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream, Summer Berries, Raspberry Sauce, Whipped Cream, Chocolate and Toasted Almonds.

Welcome back, old friend.

There’s no doubt that the family gathered around the table on a Sunday is a joy - however a heatwave in front of the stove is not!

Let us take care of the cooking while you cool off in our spacious, air conditioned restaurant - glass of Summer Sangria in hand, Sunday Roast on the way.

With England in action tonight, it feels like a good moment to bring you up to speed with our own World Cup scores.

A reminder of the rules: everyone at staff lunch gives a score out of ten based on three things. How much they enjoyed it, whether they’d be prepared to pay for it and whether they’d choose to eat it if they were visiting the country it came from.

Here’s how week one played out…

Typically, as is the way with every World Cup, things got off to a controversial start.

First up was Japan and Chef Chris cooked ケンタッキーフライドチキン, which translates to Kentucky Fried Chicken. Talk about bending the rules! 🙄

He reckons it’s big in Japan for Christmas Day - naturally we sent it upstairs for VAR to take a look and……..turns out it’s true, Google it.

Looks like the points stand.

Next up was England and Ciaron, who went straight for that most comforting of English institutions: Fish and Chips.

Taking inspiration from Paul Ainsworth, he served Battered Cod, Hand-cut Chips, Tartare Sauce and, with a very English wink, Curry Sauce.

Finished with newspaper, naturally.

Needless to say, it went down rather well.

Abbie drew Morocco and brought us Couscous with Chicken Thigh, full of warmth, spice and exactly the sort of generosity we like to see at the staff table.

Couscous has deep roots across North Africa, particularly within Amazigh cooking, and in Morocco it remains one of the great shared dishes, often served for family gatherings and Friday lunches.

A very strong showing from Abbie and a lunch that disappeared quickly.

Tanwarat, or Mink as she prefers, took Switzerland and served Pork with Rösti and a Pickled Red Onion Mustard Cream Sauce.

Rösti started life as a hearty farmer’s breakfast in German-speaking Switzerland, particularly around Bern, before becoming one of the country’s best-loved dishes. Crisp potato, pork and mustard cream is exactly the sort of mountain lunch we can get behind.

A quietly confident entry from Switzerland.

Stef followed with an Argentine feast fit for Messi himself.

Flat Iron Steak with Chimichurri, Papas a la Provenzal, Tostada and Gaucho Salad. Beef, flame, garli
