Autumn never fails to amaze me.

Each morning I find myself peering out into the garden, towards the ever later dawning of the day.... sniffing at the air alongside our dogs.

Every day offers something different for the senses, and often a surprise at the eclectic changes in temperature.

This morning the rain was creating an extra layer of magic to the scene.
..The scent of the fennel seeds was unmistakably alive in the air.
..The raindrops were catching the light.

They beckoned me from my kitchen duties and as I gazed closer and closer just briefly I was lost in the moment.... A peaceful pause to sink into the scents and sights of Autumn.

And the porridge and pancakes had to wait, ever so briefly!

The day held so much from there with extensive lists of office duties, family tasks and life admin, but looking back that micro moment of wonder was my favourite part.

I will forever be the one who gets seduced by the siren songs of nature.

Knowing they are literally on my doorstep makes days incapable of being mundane.

Is it just me, or is life all about noticing and revelling in these tiny details?

'The boundary to what we can accept is the boundary to our freedom' ~ Tara Brach

People often perceive that a mission for a peaceful life leaves you endlessly accepting and easy going to the point of passive. And it's true that it can. But the years are also teaching us that there is no hope of sustained peace without the ability to set a boundary.

So our lessons in life have needed to incorporate the art of saying no and firming up where our boundaries are. It applies at home, at Koru and in every walk of life, including with each other!

One of the more challenging aspects of this, though, has been learning to graciously define our boundaries for visitors to Koru.

Our aim is always to be as tolerant and respectful as possible of others differences. The reality is that not everyone holds that same value.

Take the example of our policy to be dog friendly. A long held choice of ours which proves popular. This week, though, we've encountered two rare instances of bluntly held differences opinion on this.

In another lifetime I toyed with the plan to work for the UN. The diplomacy needed to diffuse the loggerheads between two potentially warring factions is acute. When you're dealing with a dog owner minding their own business within a restaurant versus a vocal objector to the dog what's the right path to peace?...
Well for us in both cases we intervened.

Our values stand strong within our walls. We hold space for everyone's menu preferences and table choices where we can....but we have to set a benchmark for what we consider to be a reflection of our whole ethos.

We don't expect everyone to LOVE dogs but when visiting we do ask people to be respectful & kind to others.

This applies to the dogs too of course, who have rules! But the humans need rules too it seems=
We don't consider it acceptable to be outspoken and rude to dog owners.

It's such a balancing act but dog friendly we will stay, alongside intolerant of intolerance!

But we will aspire to holding our boundaries with kindness, not mirroring back rudeness, however tempting.

May peace pave the path! (Or as Emily in Devil Wears Prada 2 saId...may the bridges we burn light our way!)

The interplay of light and dark is an ongoing fascination.

This comes to the fore as Autumn and the darker, longer nights blow in.

Somehow realising the impending scarcity of light heightens a sense of appreciation.

We've found ourselves cramming in sunset dog walks at the end of busy days this week while we still can, almost like time is running out!

But it's taken us years to realise that life is about a balance between both light and dark. We know not to run from the dark, and allow both to coexist.

Learning that Saturday welcomes the Harvest Full Moon alongside being 'Equilux' (until now totally unheard of by us!) has also been something to marvel at.

Just in case you hadn't heard of it either, Equilux is the specific date when daylight and darkness are closest to an even 12 hours due to atmospheric refraction and the sun's physical disk size.

This is to be distinguished from Wednesday's Equinox, which apparently comes from the Latin for equal night, and is the exact moment the sun crosses the celestial equator.

Meanwhile the Harvest Full Moon is set to peak at 17:49.

Delving into these nuances of light and dark was a welcome distraction in a madly busy week, and the sunset walks were more than sanity savers, as always.

There's nothing like a vast expanse of darkening sky at golden hour to help put life in perspective. The feeling of being enveloped in the warm glow is magical. Watching the changing sky during last night's walk we couldn't help but feel so grateful not to have missed this theatre of nature.

Stepping outside to take in the Harvest Moon tomorrow evening will also be a top priority on the Equilux agenda!

These things are our non negotiables that help us to stay grounded whatever else life has in store.

As we welcome the Autumn Equinox, we are
so happy to be able to share our new
Autumn Abundance Menu with you.

After the wayward weather of Summer, we have been pondering at length lately on how best to align with the need to care more for the natural world.

For us food is more than sustenance, and very much about a feeling. We always aspire for the love we put into Koru and our food to be tangible. The added depth of weaving in the chance for this love to help keeping the world going round just feels right.

This has taken us on an enlightening exploration
of sustainability, and fanning the flames of a
spark to source as much as possible locally, in the wonderful North of England, and also contemplate how best to enhance our existing conscious choices.

And so it is that our offerings celebrate the power of nature, and include creations from several of our amazing local suppliers who share our passion for all things nature loving, including:

The fact that the launch of our Summer Menu always seems to coincide with the blossoming of our beloved climbing passion flower, that grows outside our backdoor at Koru HQ, never goes unnoticed.

Often at the busiest times like this it's so easy for us to lose sight of any balance. Yet over and over again we find that pausing to marvel at the details of nature somehow rescues us from ourselves!

All it takes is stepping outside into the garden, breathing in the scents and tuning into the birdsong,..... and it transports us back into a sense of perspective.

The intricacy of the passion flowers is something we could gaze at all day. The fact that nature designs something so exquisite that just grows of its own accord is almost mindblowing!

Somehow the feeling of this filters through and inspires us in all that we do, in creating our menus and nurturing Koru.

With Summer in full glorious swing now we invite you to join us...revelling in the sunshine, copious amounts of freedom, and the magnificence of nature... especially flowers!

It's no secret that our passion for pizza is only surpassed by our obsession with nature.

And truly we wouldn't have it any other way.

You can often find us seeking solace in busy days, in the wonder of a stolen moment... gazing transfixed into flowers, watching the sky, or marvelling at the bees or the birds.

A recent poppy filled rabbit hole has been such a joy to fall into headlong.

It's become something of a ritual to wander out into the garden early each morning and spot any new buds that have burst, whatever the weather.

Zooming in to revel at the scent, the delicate petals and stunning architecture of the seed heads has been all consuming....Admiring their strength in storms despite apparent frailty...watching the bees make them sway as they fly from flower to flower.

If only for a moment the world and our heads stop spinning and we get lost in the beauty of it all.

And the best bit of all...the thing that utterly overwhelms us with even more love for these miracles....the poppies self seeded from last year! We didn't try to control them or tend them in any way...they just appeared.

This unexpected gift from the cycle of nature is such an inspiration. It will eternally be a fundamental power behind what we do at Koru.

So what our camera reel lacks in pizza and other food shots it makes up for in flowers!

Capturing the breathtaking awe of it all is something the camera can't quite encapsulate but hopefully these snaps give a sense of the extent of our adoration! And for those of you possibly curious...these were all taken with my phone camera without any filters or editing.

This isn't so much photography as simple pausing to notice.

Yet more evidence of how all it takes to change a mood, transform a day, and maybe even save the world... is by noticing nature....

Our Summer menu is launching very soon....with magic like this at its heart and featuring some of our favourite, nature fuelled offerings.
..We just have to tear ourselves away from our beloved poppies for long enough!

Easier said that done?!

After having to withdraw from plans to visit RHS Chelsea Flower Show on Saturday for family reasons, it felt more than apt to spend the whole weekend pottering about in our own Peace garden at Koru HQ.

It truly has been nature therapy....taking time to pick daisies, rather than fretting over achieving a manicured lawn, potting on new tomato and rosemary plants, sowing seeds, setting up bee feeding stations and a bird bath, and much more!

Receiving plenty of beautiful photos from Chelsea has been an inspiration too of course, thanks to !! (No prizes for guessing which pics are Chelsea and which are our garden!!!!)

We would have loved to be there...but in the end slowing down and tending our roots here has felt so recharging and completely what we needed.

We sat out under the trees by candlelight until dark tonight, listening to the birds, not wanting the spell of the retreat into our own garden rhythms to break.

It's all been a welcome reminder of what matters most and a relaunch of our garden ready for Summer. Wishing for many more times like this over the months to come!
