Asda customer Darren has a personal reason for supporting the 30th anniversary celebrations for Tickled Pink – he’s had breast cancer himself. πŸŽ€

Darren said: "Being a being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen.”

As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign Sam is taking on a "triple no ni**le challenge" to raise awareness and inspire people to check themselves.

At 19, Sam was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy to her chest. While the treatment saved her life, radiotherapy increased their risk of developing breast cancer later in life. She underwent a risk reduction double mastectomy in April 2025 and says that for her, it was the right decision. Now 32, she has tackled the London Marathon, Chase the Sun, a 205-mile cycle ride between sunrise and sunset, and a two-mile Swim Serpentine challenge in London – raising money for our charity partner CoppaFeel!. Sam took on all of her three challenges topless to start conversations, challenge perceptions and show that her body is strong and valid.

She said: "It's liberating! I'm doing them all topless to show off the scars. I want people to be able to advocate for themselves, go to the GP and, seeing my chest, think, 'I should probably check my chest, there's a bit of a lump, go get it checked out. I don't want to get scars like that.' I think it's beautiful, this survivor's body I live in and I'm really proud of it. But I know there'll be some people that feel differently, they might see that and go "I should get that little lump checked" and that's what I'm doing. I've lived through all that rubbish so that I can try and turn it into something good. I wanted to do something bold and brave and give people an opportunity to see it."

Sam also has a message for Asda customers: "Happy 30th birthday to Tickled Pink. What you guys have been doing over the years is amazing. I've been seeing that messaging since I was a kid and you know when Asda turns pink everybody knows about it. It's such a great platform to raise that awareness and raise that message and get people checking their chests and advocating for themselves and raising money for vital things like Breast Cancer Now and everything they do and CoppaFeel! and everything they do. So thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. πŸŽ€

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. πŸ’—

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

09/10/2026

πŸ’— This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.πŸ’•

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

We wanted to say thank you to colleagues at Asda Boldon who have really gone above and beyond the call of duty, so asked colleagues to vote for who they thought most deserved recognition.

We had lots of votes but three got the most votes: Joe, ecommerce section leader who always delivers 100% to his department and colleagues; David, a colleague on Freezers, who not only gives 100% to his role, but is so caring of other colleagues and always gets involved in fundraising and store events; and Fiona is George section leader, and she will always find time to help, works really hard on her department, and gets involved in store events and Tickled Pink and Children in Need.

TV star Charlotte Crosby called in at our Boldon store to support our Happy to Chat initiative for a segment on The One Show.

Asda colleagues across the country are wearing Happy to Chat badges this Christmas after research showed that with one in 10 over 60s weren't sure they would speak to anyone across the festive period. Sunderland-born Charlotte – star of Geordie Shore and Celebrity Big Brother – is getting behind the initiative and was only too happy to have a natter with customers.

Service team leader Megan, pictured here with Charlotte, trained her up and quickly got her working the tills. Megan said: "Charlotte was absolutely lovely, so down to earth. She was so friendly. She chatted to customers about everything – Christmas, Strictly, everything really. Our customers loved being involved and quite a few got pictures and selfies with her. It was so much fun."

Well done, Daley!

When nine-year-old Daley learned about food banks in a school assembly he wanted to help – so he called in at our Boldon store with his mum Hayley to spend Β£100 of pocket money he'd saved to buy essential supplies for the foodbank at St Aidan's Catholic Academy.

Hayley, who shops at the store each week, said: "Daley is so kind-hearted he will do anything for anyone. We are so proud of him – he is amazing. He loved going round the store; it was like being on Supermarket Sweep! It's a lovely store."

When colleagues at the store heard of Daley's actions they invited him back in so they could give him a gift voucher and present to say thank you. The store's community champion Tracey said: "The store and food bank were so deeply moved by and proud of Daley's contribution. We were all in awe by the sheer amount of food he bought. He really is a local hero." And the school said: "Daley's generosity will make a real difference to families in our community. His kindness truly embodies the spirit of giving. Thank you for being an inspiration to us all."

We had a great time throwing pies the faces of managers Shaun, Micheal, Laura and Christine to raise money for Tickled Pink.

Colleagues voted for who they wanted to see pied but as it was so close we had to do all four! Poor Christine got the big pie in the face. We raised over Β£400 for Tickled Pink which was an amazing amount. – Tracey, Asda community champion

We're all so proud of Kim. It's amazing seeing so many wonderful – and richly deserved – comments about her on Facebook. πŸ’š

When an elderly customer couldn't remember the PIN number on her bank card and was getting upset because she couldn't pay for her shopping our checkouts colleague Kim immediately stepped in to help.

Kim tried to calm the lady down, told her to take a minute in case the code came back to her, but when she still couldn't remember it and was getting upset as she had no-one to call or help Kim paid for it herself. She said: "She was looking in her purse and counting out pennies, but didn't have enough so I just thought if this was my mum what would I want someone to do. I had my debit card on me so asked the manager if it was ok that I used it to pay for her, and that's what I did. It meant a lot to her. If it was my mum I'd like to think someone would do the same if the circumstances arose."

Kim was awarded star points in recognition of her kindness which covered the cost of the shopping as well as a reward for going above and beyond. Asda Boldon's community champion Tracey said: "Kim's really modest and didn't want to make a fuss, but the lady was really overwhelmed by Kim's actions and could not thank her enough. Kim is our hero."
