Asda customer Darren has a personal reason for supporting the 30th anniversary celebrations for Tickled Pink – he’s had breast cancer himself. 🎀

Darren said: "Being a being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen.”

He is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! 💗

As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign Sam is taking on a "triple no ni**le challenge" to raise awareness and inspire people to check themselves.

At 19, Sam was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy to her chest. While the treatment saved her life, radiotherapy increased their risk of developing breast cancer later in life. She underwent a risk reduction double mastectomy in April 2025 and says that for her, it was the right decision. Now 32, she has tackled the London Marathon, Chase the Sun, a 205-mile cycle ride between sunrise and sunset, and a two-mile Swim Serpentine challenge in London – raising money for our charity partner CoppaFeel!. Sam took on all of her three challenges topless to start conversations, challenge perceptions and show that her body is strong and valid.

She said: "It's liberating! I'm doing them all topless to show off the scars. I want people to be able to advocate for themselves, go to the GP and, seeing my chest, think, 'I should probably check my chest, there's a bit of a lump, go get it checked out. I don't want to get scars like that.' I think it's beautiful, this survivor's body I live in and I'm really proud of it. But I know there'll be some people that feel differently, they might see that and go "I should get that little lump checked" and that's what I'm doing. I've lived through all that rubbish so that I can try and turn it into something good. I wanted to do something bold and brave and give people an opportunity to see it."

Sam also has a message for Asda customers: "Happy 30th birthday to Tickled Pink. What you guys have been doing over the years is amazing. I've been seeing that messaging since I was a kid and you know when Asda turns pink everybody knows about it. It's such a great platform to raise that awareness and raise that message and get people checking their chests and advocating for themselves and raising money for vital things like Breast Cancer Now and everything they do and CoppaFeel! and everything they do. So thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

A big thank you to Denise and Aimee from YOUR CVS NOTTS for visiting the store earlier this week to speak with customers about Stoptober and offer blood pressure checks.

They also helped customers learn how to download and use the NHS App to access their health and care records. 📲

Denise and Aimee will be back in store next month to host another awareness event for our customers. We look forward to welcoming them back!

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

09/10/2026

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

We’re back for day two of our Tickled Pink Fundraising Weekend and we’re continuing to come together in store to raise vital funds and support those affected by breast cancer.

Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our wonderful volunteers are giving up their time to support Tickled Pink and raise money for its charity partners, helping fund important work in breast cancer awareness, research and support.

And, of course, our giant CoppaFeel! b**b is back out in store!🤣 It’s a fun way to get people talking about breast health and most importantly, remembering to check themselves.

Today, we’re joined by Vanessa, Lisa and Lorraine, who have kindly given up their time to support Tickled Pink and help raise awareness.

Vanessa and Lisa are sisters and both have their own breast cancer stories to share.

Vanessa was first diagnosed after finding a lump under her arm, which had spread to her lymph nodes. She went on to have chemotherapy. Nine years later, her breast cancer was picked up through a routine mammogram, but this time she didn’t need chemotherapy.

Lisa’s breast cancer was also picked up through a routine mammogram, and she went on to have chemotherapy.

Lorraine had no signs or symptoms, but her breast cancer was detected through a routine mammogram.

Their message is simple but so important: go for your mammograms and don’t miss them. Even when you feel perfectly well and have no symptoms, a mammogram can pick something up early.

Thank you to everyone supporting Tickled Pink this weekend – whether you’re volunteering, donating or simply stopping by to show your support.

It’s that time of year again - our annual Tickled Pink Fundraising Weekend!

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, amazing volunteers are joining us in their local Asda stores to help raise vital funds for Tickled Pink’s charity partners, supporting their important work in breast cancer awareness, research and support.

Today, we’re joined by a wonderful group of friends - Deborah, Luke, Jake and Michelle - who have kindly given up their time to be here in store and help us make a difference.

They’re here because Deborah has her own breast cancer experience to share. Her breast cancer was picked up during a routine mammogram, despite having no signs or symptoms. She went on to have radiotherapy.

Her advice is simple but so important: check yourself, go for your mammograms and don’t ignore anything. If something doesn’t feel right, get it checked out.

Thank you to everyone supporting Tickled Pink this weekend whether you’re volunteering, donating or simply stopping by to show your support…you really are making a difference.

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of visiting Andrea at the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s Macmillan Cancer Support Centre.

It was great to have a catch up with Andrea and chat about the service, which is based at the YMCA Newark and Sherwood.

The centre offers drop-in services and appointments for personalised help for anyone and everyone affected by cancer, to support people’s physical, social, emotional, financial and practical wellbeing, all under one roof.

We made a donation of tea, milk and biscuits from our store budget, for anyone visiting the centre to enjoy☕️🥛🍪

You can find more information about the centre by visiting https://www.sfh-tr.nhs.uk/services/macmillan-cancer-information-and-support-centre/
