Why it began
I moved into the Ivy House in August 2012 with my partner Tegai and my two children aiming to create a family run, community based cafe reminiscent of my grandma’s house. Spending time there meant a constant flow of family and friends just strolling in to enjoy the aga and a cup of tea. The highlight of my evenings as a child would be supper in the front room. Always a table cloth, tinned salmon, sliced boiled egg, cucember and tomatoes, pickled onions with a proper pickle fork, crisps in a bowl, a big lump of cheese and cake. Grown ups sat on the sofa, kids sat on the floor. Simple pleasures, but the best. And that was my hope for the Ivy House.
Sadly life hasn’t quite gone to plan. Tegai died suddenly in 2015 and, incredible as it may seem, not every child’s dream is to run a cafe alongside their mum. So now there is just me and, over the years, an assortment of lovely local people who have helped keep this place and me going. My dream is still the same; a place where people can just sit and relax, meet old friends, make new friends, forget the world’s troubles just for a while; and it goes without saying, eat cake.
Sometimes we need to remember the simple things. x
