Happy birthday to our Ellie… this hard working backbone of the KP section is sweet 17 today. To celebrate her, we stayed true to our BB tradition and blasted out the birthday song, presented her with a cake and had a little after work gathering. Have a fabulous day young lady and thanks for all you do for the Black Bull ❤️Ellie Sim

The weekend is here yet again… and it dawns without one of our much loved young team members who has left to start university next week.

Chloe Harris (16) who joined as a runner in 2024, clocked off after three seasons last week to study Scots Law at Dundee University.

Chloe - who was a student at Moffat Academy - hopes to become a lawyer one day and has been an absolute asset to the Black Bull team. Flexible, versatile, conscientious, committed, reliable, never calling in sick or turning up late, her work ethic is exemplary. So as she prepares for her next chapter, we know she will fly high and achieve all her dreams and goals.

But while she is excited to begin her university adventure, Chloe was a little sad to say goodbye.

She said ‘ The Black Bull has been a massive part of my life and I’ve loved every minute of it (well… almost every minute) the best part of it was the people who work there and the great friendships I’ve made over the years.

She continued…

‘I will miss the chaos that comes with working at the inn.. but I definitely won’t miss the early mornings on housekeeping..’

Aaw… 🥲😘

As Chloe (affectionately known to us by her nickname Dora) clocked out for the last time we didn’t let her leave quietly and threw a farewell party complete with slide show, l comic strip (courtesy of John) and a box of essential university survival gifts including super noodles and a personalised note book..!

So off you go to Dundee Chloe Harris, we will miss you! But we we are holding you to your promise to maybe come back next summer (and if you do, we will try not to put you on housekeeping!)

GOODBYE AND GOOD LUCK...

We will miss you ###

August..

Over and out.

Thank goodness!

We’ve made it through the busiest month of the season. It was stressful, complicated and draining, but rather amazing…

Week in week out we hit our targets and as we prepare for curtain up on September, we can take a breath after our August finale which was a bit of a headbanger in more ways than one..

As expected for an (English) Bank Holiday, customers came in droves as our bar manager went down with a migraine - meaning the busiest weekend of the year on our bar became a one man job 😫

If ever there was a weekend to not get a migraine it was that one!

But we survived.. kind of!

We had a lot of laughs and a few tears and tantrums.. by 4pm yesterday I wanted to cry - or maybe scream - tied to the bar, needing a p*e, as a sea of faces stared expectantly as the pressure ramped.

Enough to give ME a migraine too!

But despite the slog, I’m grateful we are busy and thankful that the wheels keep turning and the BB bus stays on the road - where many of our hospitality industry p*ers have broken down…

We made it through to closing time without too many dramas and as we locked up at 6pm John announced we had hit our targets for the week.. the month and this meant our team were rewarded with a bonus.

Speaking of our team they all deserve a shout out..

First of all a big well done to 16 year old Sophie - who ran the floor better than many adults we’ve employed in the past..

Next up Alan.. despite feeling a bit ropey he was exceptional, putting out plate after plate of delicious carvery - 134 servings to be exact which is excellent in a four hour service time frame - we think it’s our best performance (pro-rata), yet.

Our young team as always did us proud like the true professionals they are. Well done Courtney, Isla, Scarlett, Lacey, Leon, Cass.

Thanks to Tash and Suzanne who did an exceptional job making sure the hotel rooms were serviced and fresh for our weekend guests, while General ManagerJohn and the very capable young Jayden ran the kitchen as smooth as silk.

What a great ending to the eight month.

A fantastic month which saw us beat the curve, as we went roaring along at full pelt, maximising every single opportunity to sell a room, plate of food or a pint.

At the Black Bull Inn, we aren’t just servers.. we have a collective sales minded attitude - believe me that’s the difference between win or fail… the shared goals combined with a strong team spirit that keeps us pushing on.

So as we prepare for a new month and the last leg of 2026, we are sending out a big thank you to everyone who came in and supported us this month - and all year.. we look forward to seeing you all in September!

Open today for lunch 12-3pm

And just like that the final weekend of August is well underway, bringing with it the hustle and bustle of English bank holiday tourists descending for a couple of days Moffat magic.

For us it’s not just a busy weekend - but the last big push of summer..

And of 2026.

We’ve been riding the BB merry go round for six months which have wizzed by in a whirl - as one would expect on a carousel like ours.

This business is seasonal, we are a tourist led destination for food and rooms and we must earn 12 months income in nine to secure the winter.

Yes - we close in winter, because contrary to popular belief, opening your doors can often be the quickest route to closing them.

For good!

It wasn’t always the way.

Once upon a time we were a seven day breakfast to dinner destination.

A pub with rooms and late night revelling. But that was never my model. I realised very quickly that late nights, live music and an all day food service was not the way to win through or stay open, which is why these days we operate shorter shifts and a five day week.

This was not popular with customers at first. Many folks don’t like to leave an establishment before 10pm. People want to sit with a pint and chill..

But as silly as it sounds, that doesn’t pay our bills so we had to introduce tough measures and strict open/closing times to protect our bottom line..

And our approach has been exonerated. Shortening our trading hours to cut costs has reflected positively.

We waited nervously, with bated breath for our quarterly figures…
and got a slap on the back from the bean counters, who’ve seen many of their hospitality clients go bust under the increasing pressure of rising costs and lower footfall.

So knowing we’ve bucked the trend - a trend which includes many big names like JD Wetherspoon and Beefeater - has spurred us on.

So as we get at the big finale of summer abc prepare for a calmer Autumn it’s our last BIG chance to reap the rewards of bank holiday bedlam.

After which we’ll lock up on Sunday, a bit bruised and battered, and raise a glass to yet another successful summer.. .

And then we’ll get ready for what September has in store 🙏🏻

We’ve always been complete suckers for a cute pup here at The Black Bull Inn, but it’s been a while since we met one as adorable as Benji - an eight week old St Bernard who visited recently, before heading across the Irish Sea to start life with his new family.

Benji’s humans broke up their trip with an overnight stay before heading home to Ireland. They’d been to collect new addition, Benji from the breeder and were looking forward to being a family together.

How lucky they are to have him - gorgeous from the get go, he was relaxed, unphased, placid and simply one of the sweetest pups we’ve met…

He simply chilled out on the seat while his family enjoyed a Sunday roast, attracting gasps and adoration from everyone who spotted him!

What a charmer…❤️

In fact, Benji was so content, you’d be forgiven for thinking he’d been with his family since birth…and not just a few hours!

Meeting Benji made our day, but this happens to us often.

When you work somewhere as dog friendly as The Black Bull, falling in love with canine customers is par for the course. We get to meet some marvellous mutts who come back to see us again and again..

With this in mind we are hoping one day - when he’s a much bigger St Bernard - we will get to meet the beautiful Benji again.

PROUD MOMENT FOR THE BLACK BULL LAST WEEK..

Our very own Isla Wolstenholme, was crowned Moffat GALA QUEEN 2026 and took centre stage at one of the town’s most cherished annual traditions.

Isla, who is 15, has worked at the inn for over a year and is a valued member of The Black Bull team. She was chosen for the coveted role after submitting an essay and attending an interview, where she clearly wowed with her warmth and confidence to beat the other applicants to the crown.

Becoming Gala Queen was the fulfilment of a childhood dream for Isla - who attended many Gala’s and always looked up to the Gala Queens - hoping to follow in their footsteps one day.

And then last weekend that day came….!

Reflecting afterwards, she said it was an amazing and emotional event and the best part was seeing it all come together after so many months planning and also being part of an amazing tradition that she will never forget.

When she’s not wearing her crown, Isla enjoys working at the inn - which has helped build her confidence and learn new skills. She loves working with her friends and relishes the fun team spirit which makes the job so enjoyable. She also likes meeting people from all walks of life when they come in to eat.

In the future, Isla hopes to work in the hair and beauty industry and is already practising for that by doing friends make-up and nails in her spare time! When she’s not beautifying others she also loves horse riding and school (Moffat Academy) where biology and PE are her favourite subjects.

Congratulations, Isla - Moffat Gala Queen 2026. You undertook your role with grace and enthusiasm and did your town proud. You are not only a wonderful ambassador for Moffat but also for the Black Bull Inn and we are very, very proud of you!
