Saigon Lotus’s Highlights & Special Moments – Looking Back on an Incredible Year

As we look back on the past year, our hearts are filled with gratitude.

What began as a dream has grown into something far greater than a restaurant. Inspired by the timeless charm of Hội An, Saigon Lotus is a cosy, lantern-lit Vietnamese Cultural House adorned with traditional rattan décor, nestled within a beautiful historic building designed by the renowned architect Edgar Wood. More than a place to dine, it is a welcoming space where authentic Vietnamese cuisine, culture, kindness, learning, and community come together under one roof—bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together through shared experiences, meaningful connections, and the true spirit of Vietnamese hospitality.

Over the past year, we have been incredibly honoured to:

🌿 Welcome wonderful guests from the UK and around the world, many discovering authentic Vietnamese cuisine for the very first time.

🍜 Share the true flavours of Vietnam through our family recipes, freshly prepared dishes, traditional Vietnamese street food, Vietnamese coffee, and our signature Egg Coffee.

❤️ Host community events, charity fundraisers, cultural celebrations, cooking classes, children’s workshops, leadership programmes, and volunteer initiatives that have brought people together through kindness and friendship.

Looking back on the past year at Saigon Lotus Middleton fills our hearts with gratitude.

What an incredible journey it has been—filled with unforgettable memories, joyful laughter, meaningful friendships, and countless moments of kindness shared at our cosy cultural space.

None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our wonderful local community, dedicated volunteers, family, friends, and the many international visitors who have walked through our doors and become part of the Saigon Lotus family.

We are also deeply honoured to have welcomed the media teams from Vietnam Television (VTV), Vietnam Today, and Manchester Finest, whose visits helped share our story of celebrating authentic Vietnamese cuisine, culture, and community with audiences both in the UK and around the world.

Every smile, every conversation, every cooking class, every shared meal, and every act of kindness has become part of our story. Together, we have created far more than a restaurant—we have built a home where cultures connect, friendships flourish, and beautiful memories are made.

Today, Saigon Lotus was deeply honoured to celebrate the beautiful life of Mrs Claudia Bunton — a kind-hearted grandmother, mother, wife, and cherished friend of myself and the Saigon Lotus family.

Following her heartfelt funeral service, family and friends gathered together at Saigon Lotus to share memories and celebrate the warmth, positivity, and joy that Claudia brought to everyone around her.

Claudia was a truly resilient woman whose strength and kindness inspired not only her loved ones, but also me personally throughout my journey of building Saigon Lotus. In her presence, life’s challenges seemed lighter, replaced by gratitude, hope, positivity and the courage to keep moving forward.

Her beautiful values live on through her wonderful children and loved ones, especially Dr Penny, my dearest friend, whose kindness and great work in Paediatric Clinical Neuropsychology continues to touch so many lives.

Dear Claudia, we love you. You will remain forever with us in our hearts and in our spirits. Your gentle kindness and loving heart, especially your contagious positivity and resilient spirit will continue to guide us on the path ahead.

Vietnamese Traditional Egg Coffee, right here in Middleton Gardens. 🇻🇳☕️🌳

Today, our little corner of Middleton was filled with joy, both inside our Vietnamese Cultural House and right outside our restaurant in the beautiful Middleton Gardens.

The sun was shining, a gentle breeze danced through the trees, birds sang overhead, and our lovely customers enjoyed authentic Vietnamese home-cooked food and traditional egg coffee beneath the shade of our beautiful tree.

It was one of those moments that felt too special not to capture.

Our lovely customer carefully held her phone perfectly still, pressed record, and thought she’d captured the moment to share with her family… only to realise at the very end that it hadn’t recorded at all! 😂

We all burst into laughter.

Thankfully, another family member had filmed it from a different angle, so this precious little memory wasn’t lost after all.

Sometimes the most beautiful moments aren’t the perfectly recorded ones. They’re the ones filled with laughter, shared around the table with family, friends, delicious food, and a little Vietnamese egg coffee.

Sometimes, kindness brings the most beautiful surprises. ❤️

Our last customers today Alan and Mary, born and bread in Middleton, were a lovely couple who walked in at 8:15 pm, well after our Sunday closing time of 7:00 pm.

I was already tidying up and getting ready to head home, but there was something so genuine and kind about them that I simply couldn’t turn them away. We welcomed them in and had the pleasure of serving them their very first Vietnamese meal ever in their life.

As they enjoyed every bite, my heart was full. Before they left, they gave us a 5⭐ review, but it was their words that truly touched me.

The husband, who shared that he has been going through cancer treatment, said:

“I don’t eat a great deal, but this is the best meal I’ve had in the last two or three years.”

His wife smiled and added:
“The food is absolutely beautiful.”

Those words will stay with me for a very long time.

Moments like these remind me that Saigon Lotus has always been about so much more than food. It’s about opening our doors with kindness, sharing the warmth of Vietnamese culture, and creating moments of comfort, connection, and hope around the table.

Saigon Lotus is the culmination of a 20-year journey built on kindness, gratitude, culture, and community.

My heart is filled with gratitude to the British people for giving me the precious opportunity to come to the UK for the very first time in 2005. That single opportunity changed the course of my life and planted the seed for what Saigon Lotus has become today.

The Middleton community continues to fill my heart with love and gratitude. ❤️

Yesterday, James served one of his most special tables—his younger brother and both of his wonderful nans. Their only request was:

“Can James make our drinks, please?”

Just eight weeks ago, James first came to Saigon Lotus as a customer. Before leaving, his nan asked if James could volunteer to learn life skills, build confidence, and gain experience. Watching him grow the past 8 weeks in our growth mindset and life skills training at Saigon Lotus has been such a joy.

Then one of his nans said something that left me speechless:

“I’m going to start a GoFundMe to help buy an air conditioner for Saigon Lotus. You’ve done so much for our community, and I know people will want to give something back.”

It wasn’t about the air conditioner. It was about the kindness behind those words.

Saigon Lotus has always been so much more than a restaurant. It is a Vietnamese Cultural House and a cosy community space where cultures are celebrated, young people learn and grow, community heroes are championed through our voluntary projects, strangers become friends, and people from all walks of life come together for a community cause.

It is a place where kindness, connection, and cultural heritage are shared over heartfelt conversations, authentic Vietnamese food, traditional egg coffee, Vietnamese cooking classes, skills building workshops and our youth driven projects bringing our community closer.

Yesterday reminded me that this dream no longer belongs only to us.

It belongs to our community too.

As I looked across the beautiful Middleton Gardens, with its lush green trees and colourful flowers beautifully lining the road, I realised something.

The real beauty of Middleton isn’t only in its surroundings.

It’s in its people.

It’s in grandparents encouraging young people to volunteer and believe in themselves.

It’s in neighbours supporting local independent businesses.

It’s in the countless acts of kindness that quietly bring a community closer together,

To James, your family, and everyone in Middleton—thank you for making this dream something we all share. We feel incredibly honoured to call Middleton home. ❤️
