🧀 “Come along, Gromit… I’ve got a feeling this is going to be a grand day out.”
The morning mist hangs over the Yorkshire Dales.
A sleepy market town begins to wake.
The smell of fresh milk drifts across the valley…
…and somewhere, a familiar voice breaks the silence.
“Wensleydale, Gromit! We’re off to Wensleydale!”
The journey ends in Hawes, where Britain’s most famous cheese has been lovingly crafted for more than 800 years. First made by French monks, perfected by Yorkshire hands, and still produced in the heart of the Dales, every wheel carries a piece of history.
But even the greatest stories have a moment when everything hangs in the balance.
By the early 1990s, the future of the Wensleydale Creamery looked uncertain. Sales had dwindled, and the famous Yorkshire cheese was close to fading into history.
Then, in 1995, came A Close Shave.
Nick Park chose Wensleydale simply because he thought it sounded funny when Wallace said it. He had no idea the real creamery was struggling. Yet Wallace’s unforgettable obsession with Wensleydale captured the imagination of millions. Suddenly everyone wanted to know what this mysterious cheese was… and more importantly, what it tasted like. The renewed demand helped breathe new life into the creamery and its famous cheese.
Today, stepping into the Wensleydale Creamery feels like walking onto the set of a Wallace & Gromit adventure.
Watch the cheesemakers at work.
Taste the legendary Wensleydale.
Explore the history that almost came to an end.
And if you’re lucky…
You might just hear someone whisper…
“Cracking cheese, Gromit!”
Some heroes wear capes.
Some wear knitted tank tops.
And sometimes… all it takes to save a Yorkshire legend is one inventor, one loyal dog, and an unforgettable love affair with Wensleydale. 🧀🐶
