Built on the original 1859 Brecon & Merthyr Railway line, we’ve been welcoming passengers since 1980. BMR was built on part of the abandoned Brecon & Merthyr Railway opened in 1859,finally closing in 1964. BMR opened to passengers in 1980 and now runs to Torpantau, high in the Brecon Beacons on its 10 mile round trip through beautiful Welsh scenery.

🍂 All aboard for autumn at the Brecon Mountain Railway! 🚂

As the valley’s colours change, this is arguably the best time of year to enjoy a ride — with golden hillsides and beautiful reservoir views along the way.

Our trains now run five days a week, with the railway closed on Mondays and Fridays.

Our final regular services of the season run on Sunday 1st November, so there’s still time to join us for an autumn adventure! 🍁

It’s our guard Steve’s last day today, before he hangs up his whistle and retires!

There were suitable decorations at Pontsticill and for a surprise family and friends joined his last train - unfortunately the weather wasn’t better.

Happy retirement Steve - and thanks from all at BMR and your many customers!

A huge congratulations to Simon and Kat! 💍❤️

Simon decided that the stop beside the beautiful reservoir at Pontsticill, here at the Brecon Mountain Railway, was the perfect place to ask Kat to marry him — and she said YES! 🥂🎉

Here’s a lovely photo of the newly betrothed couple beside the Santa Teresa locomotive, celebrating their very special moment. 🚂❤️

We’re delighted to be part of such a wonderful memory. At the Brecon Mountain Railway, we’re here for making memories at all of life’s special events. 💕✨

Congratulations again to you both, Simon and Kat — wishing you a lifetime of happiness together! 🥰 Come back and visit us to let us know how the story continues in the future!

Throwback Thursday: Torpantau, then and now

A train at the old Torpantau station, with the line disappearing into the hills beyond. Today, Torpantau is the end of our journey, but the remains of the original railway tell a much bigger story.

In our recent video, Ioan and Stuart explore what survives beyond our present-day station, follow the old route and head towards Torpantau Tunnel, also known as the “Devil’s Tunnel”. There’s even a look at whether the railway could ever go further again.

Do you remember the old Torpantau station, or have you explored the remains nearby? We’d love to hear your memories.

Summer may be drawing to a close, but there is still time for a railway day out in Bannau Brycheiniog. 🚂

Make the most of those last holiday days with mountain views, reservoir scenery and the chance to slow down and enjoy the journey.

Whether you are visiting Wales, entertaining family or looking for one more day out before the school routine returns, come and travel with us.

Pre-booking is recommended, particularly on busier dates, so you can choose your journey before you set off.
