We are a traditional artisan bakery in Crich, Derbyshire. We sell a wide range of specialist bakery products, home made café food and deli-style groceries.

We produce hand crafted artisan bread from our 100 year old bakery and offer a selection of sweet and savoury takeaway options alongside award winning coffee. We are a busy and vibrant artisan bakery, delicatessen and café in Crich and now also in Matlock, Derbyshire. We make bread, cakes, pizzas, pies, quiches, salads, hot and cold snacks, soups and a whole load more deliciously irresistible, top-quality goodies. Most of what we serve is made from scratch and contains no additives or preservatives.

This is what small, local business is all about. Where you know your customers and they know you (and even if we don’t) we act like we do. 🤗

One of our lovely customers entered a flower arranging competition and came 2nd. She donated the arrangement to us as she said she wanted to give it to someone who always makes her day and put a smile on her face.

Despite all the hard days and the challenges this is why we do what we do.

Two of us loafers live in Matlock and we travel the road to the bakery. It’s always always beautiful no matter the weather but today it was worthy of stopping the car to take a photo. Aren’t we lucky? ☀️ 😊 ✨

Another great reason to own a bakery… you HAVE to try out the new drink options! Our brand new Toasted Marshmallow Hot Chocolate is available in Crich and Ashbourne and it is absolute perfection after a walk in the peaks. 🍂 🍁

Hey… we’ve kind of been a bit quiet again haven’t we? You see the thing is we’ve all got full time jobs within the bakery itself so managing social media too is… well too far down the list. This post may be the come back (it may not be).

We’ve had our fair few ups and down this year. The biggest down being the leak (I’ll come to that) closely followed by the engine dying in one of our vans (£7000 we really don’t want to spend… nor had spare… what small business these days just has £7k lying around).

Anyway… there have been some big ups too! We now supply the Dovecote restaurant at Morley Hayes which is just… WOW and the newly taken over C**k Inn at Mugginton. We’ve established a really great team in the bakery now too so we’re making progress.

Both shops (Crich and Ashbourne) need a bit of love. Crich more so. We finally got some money through for the insurance too so now we just need to plan when we close to do the work! We will keep you updated. I promise exciting things to come 🥰

What happened to pizza night…?

This is a kinda sad post because it does look like pizza night has to go on the back burner for a while and honestly it might not return (not on a Wednesday anyway)!

It’ll be no surprise at all to you that the last 18 months have been quite tough. We’ve struggled with staff changes, training, a fairly impactful flood, rising costs (and a whole load of other day to day issues too).

Pizza night was always run by either Tim or Danny, both owners of the business and it became something that just chipped away at their time and energy (which really needed to be spent elsewhere). So it got cancelled and it never really restarted again. We then saw how this positively impacted the business because we were able to concentrate on the things that needed to be done.

We didn’t want pizza night to be something that was half hearted. So we’ve made the decision to say goodbye to that chapter for now.

We know it’ll be missed and we’ve actually had the odd hurtful message about not doing it but sometimes you have to make decisions that are hard because you know they are right for the business.

BUT as part of our bigger plan and vision we do want to offer some pop up nights. Perhaps seasonal evening events, Italian nights, grazing platter nights, monthly restaurant nights… we’re not sure quite yet as our first priority is getting the shop front looking spot on again but there will be something.

Thanks for sticking with us… you know we couldn’t be more grateful ☺️

We’re open in Crich today between 9 and 2. It’s certainly a fresher day today (thank goodness) but we’ll still be on the iced coffees for a little while yet!

Big up to all of our staff who have made it through this week (especially our bakers). Never ever has it felt as hot in our bakery. I’m not sure there are many jobs that would’ve been hotter this week???

We have continued to bake all week so that we can keep bread on our shelves and deliveries to our wholesale customers going.

The heat plays havoc with dough so there may be inconsistencies in size and shape this week but under the circumstances I think we’ve done exceptionally well.

A big thank you to customers who continued to visit both of our shops this week and the markets despite it being too hot to be out… it makes a huge difference to us!
