Dorothy Clive Garden

Dorothy Clive Garden 🌿 A Garden Built On Love 🌿 This charity still manages, what is now a much larger and considerably enhanced 12 acre garden.
(350)

The garden’s initial creation lay in Colonel Harry Clive’s wartime decision of 1940, to provide his ailing wife - Dorothy - with a ‘series of interesting walks’ as she battled with Parkinson’s disease. Unfortunately Dorothy died in 1942 but Colonel Clive continued work apace throughout the 1940s and 1950s, especially in The Quarry Garden which covers approximately 2 acres. In 1958 management of the then ‘fledgling’ garden was entrusted, by Colonel Clive, to a newly established, small-scale, independent charity – The Willoughbridge Garden Trust. Currently, the ‘Trust’ directly employs a small specialist team of staff to manage the site’s affairs. These core staff members are ably supported by a dedicated group of volunteers who primarily help with gardening, administration and the running of events. It should be noted that the aims of The Willoughbridge Garden Trust are twofold and as follows:

1. To maintain, enhance and further develop a garden inspired by the memory of the late Dorothy Clive to be used for the enjoyment and benefit of the public.

2. To promote and support horticultural education for the continuing benefit of both students and the general public. These twin charitable aims underpin all our ongoing work. They provide a creative, vibrant, motivating and genuinely worthwhile structure for the charity. Both our staff and volunteers are all committed to providing our garden visitors with a stimulating and fulfilling garden trip. Why not come along to support and enjoy this inspiring garden with us?

After such a successful summer concert, our resident Musician Hannah is back for the next instalment of her concert series: Songs for Autumn.

Held in our beautiful surroundings, Hannah will take you on a journey through the sounds of the season with acoustic favourites.

Seating for the concert will be provided inside the pavilion and is informal and unallocated. As space is more limited than at the summer concert, there will be fewer tickets available for this performance.

The concert will include a 20-minute interval, during which guests can step outside the pavilion, stretch their legs and purchase some autumnal refreshments which will be available to purchase.

Places are limited, and with the previous concert selling out quickly, early booking is strongly recommended.
We look forward to welcoming you for another memorable evening of music.

Today marks the Autumn Equinox – the point in the year when day and night are almost equal in length, and we officially begin our journey into autumn. 🍁

At Dorothy Clive Garden, the seasons are always changing, and now is the perfect time to notice the first signs of autumn appearing across the garden. From changing leaves and seed heads to the last blooms of summer, there’s plenty to look out for. 🌿🍂

Why not come and enjoy a seasonal stroll, take in the views and see how the garden is beginning to transform?

🍁 Happy Autumn Equinox from everyone at Dorothy Clive Garden! 🌳

🌿🕊️ International Day of Peace 🕊️🌿

Today, we’re celebrating International Day of Peace with a beautiful reminder from our wonderful volunteers. 🌸

They’ve created this lovely peace symbol using flowers from the garden – perfectly capturing the sense of calm and peace that can be found here at Dorothy Clive Garden.

For many of our visitors, the garden is more than somewhere to enjoy the plants and views. It’s a place to slow down, take a breath, enjoy nature and find a little moment of peace away from the everyday. 🌿

So today, we’re celebrating peace in all its forms – in our communities, with one another, and in the quiet moments we find amongst nature. 💚

A special thank you to our volunteers for creating such a beautiful symbol of peace.
