A bit of a sad incident last night and a warning to my colleagues around Mansfield to be aware.

I say sad because it is people like the ones we had on last night that get the rest of their community a bad name. In my opinion undeservedly so.

Many you will have guessed by now that I’m talking about guests from the travelling community. Now, I want to say that my experience of the travelling community has overwhelmingly been positive. When we ran the Widecombe Fair we had regular guests who called Hilary the boss lady and were all very respectful. That’s been my experience.

However, what happened last night in all my years of doing this job has ALWAYS been from that community. And the sad thing you can spot it a mile off as they aren’t particularly original. One person becomes the sacrifice and sends their meal back as there is a “hair” in it and then refuse to pay for the rest. Then when challenged, play the race card, we are only treating them this way because they are gypsies.

It was in danger of getting quite confrontational with other guests wanting to stop them leaving because they could see what was happening.

Now, they won’t come back to me but others may do and this party will no doubt go elsewhere.
