Google Hangouts on Air

A video tutorial from Lynda.com explaining how you can broadcast your class or talk to a larger group of people via Google Hangouts. This is useful for distance learning courses or events held across multiple sites.

It has been used for MMU events that were held simultaneously at All Saints and Crewe.

Google Hangouts

Google Hangouts is free video-conferencing tool that allows you to communicate via live video with up to 10 people. It can be used for group work, research collaboration, but also if you wanted a guest speaker to talk directly to your class without actually being there.

Here is a short video from Lynda.com explaining how it works.

Using Google Hangout provides you with in-depth training on Education + Elearning. Taught by Aaron Quigley as part of the Google Apps for Students

Evernote

Evernote is an easy-to-use, free app that can help students stay organised and manage study-related information, such as lecture notes, resources for assignments, portfolios, etc.

It has been successfully used at MMU with PLP students to help them manage study-related information, and in a faculty-wide unit at Hollings for group collaboration and e-portfolios.

Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, clip web pages and record voice reminders. It makes these notes completely searchable, lets you share them and, what’s best, you can access them across all your devices - PC, Mac, smartphone and tablet - whether you are at home, at university or on the go.

Here is an example of a note created in Evernote of how Evernote was used in a L4 unit in HLSS: http://tinyurl.com/magdaevernote

For more advice on how to use Evernote, please contact Magda.

- Create an interactive screencast as a resource for your students
- Take photos on your mobile device and add annotations and voice over with instructions and explanations on the go
- Get students to create an interactive learning resource for their peers

Explain Everything can be downloaded for iOS and Android devices or Windows for £2.29.

This 4 minute video briefly demonstrates some of the features from the Explain Everything app. For more information please contact your E-Learning Support Officer.

Five Benefits of Podcasting:

1. Exam revision: Record lectures or short summaries to help students revise for an exam

2. Missed classes: Students who missed a lecture can catch up via a podcast

3. Focuses attention: Students can listen and think about what you are saying during the lecture, then revisit it as often as they like, make full notes or check anything they missed or did not follow first time round

4. Mobile learning: Students can download the podcast onto their mobile devices and listen to/watch them anywhere and anytime

5. Easy to do: A podcast can be just audio, audio and video (e.g. your voice over slides) or a screen cast (e.g. explaining how to use an online application or tool). With Moodle, BB Flashback and Kaltura it is dead easy to do!
