We are heartbroken to confirm that The Whim Wham Cafe has now closed.
After being informed that the railway arch, in which the business has occupied since 2012, will be subject to an eviction notice at some point in the next year as part of Network Rail’s Northern Hub development plans, we have been left with no choice but to close the business.
As an independent family business, still in its infancy our position is too fragile and the business is not strong enough to hold on whilst further details of eviction come to light.
Our business plan was one which was based on other long term changes in the area, with the redevelopment of the First Street site e.g. HOME being the key factor in locating at Arch 64. With the location being pulled from under us at this key time it is impossible for the business to extend its lease and therefore to fulfil its potential. We are unable to unlock finance to help the business during this uncertain time or to push the business forward.
Since finding out the news we have been fighting to find a way out of the predicament but the company has no options left but to cease trading.
We are devastated after putting every ounce of our energy into growing the business from day one. We now need to build ourselves up again from what has been a distressing few weeks and to focus on the future.
We wish all the other independent businesses along Whitworth Street West, The Star and Garter near Piccadilly Station, and others that will be affected down the line, the best in what is becoming an uncertain time.
Thank you to all our splendid customers, staff, musicians, performers, family and friends for your continued support.
