SENTENCED | A persistent shoplifter from Malvern was given a suspended sentence for multiple offences when he appeared at court on Saturday (25 July).

Declan Wharton, 34, of no fixed abode, was located and arrested by PC Matthew Waite on Friday (24 July) before being charged and remanded for nine theft from shop offences.

Wharton appeared before Kidderminster Magistrates Court on Saturday where those nine and another six theft from shop offences were also dealt with.

He was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay total compensation of £1,369.

PC Waite said: “Wharton targeted multiple stores across the town, so we were pleased to locate, charge and remand him for these offences. Though his sentence was suspended, if he appears before the courts again, he could be facing a custodial term.

“Malvern Safer Neighbourhood Team will continue to target our most prolific offenders that cause the most harm and loss to Malvern’s retail shops and businesses.”

Officers urge residents to remain vigilant following bike thefts

Offices are investigating two recent bike thefts in the Teme Valley area and informing residents of the incidents.

In the early hours of Sunday 28 June and Tuesday 8 July, high-value bicycles were stolen from two separate addresses in the Clifton-on-Teme and Eastham areas.

Offenders gained access to outbuildings and garages to steal the items. In both incidents, the bikes had been advertised for sale online, however, neither victim had shared their address.

While enquiries are ongoing and it is not yet known whether the offences are linked, the circumstances suggest the offenders may have specifically targeted the addresses to steal the bicycles.

Officers are reminding anyone selling bicycles or other high-value items online to take extra precautions to protect themselves and their property.

Crime prevention advice includes:

• Avoid including photographs that reveal your home address or identifiable landmarks near your property especially if advertising on social media.
• Store bicycles in a secure garage or outbuilding and ensure doors, locks and hinges are of good quality and in good working order.
• Consider using additional security measures such as ground anchors, alarms, CCTV or tracking devices.
• Secure bicycles with a robust Sold Secure-approved lock, even when stored inside a garage or shed.
• Record the frame number and take photographs of your bicycle to assist recovery if it is stolen.
• Register bicycles on https://orlo.uk/NKQqi - if your bike is ever stolen and recovered by the police, it can be traced back to you.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity or has information that may assist enquiries is asked to contact officers by emailing [email protected]
