In 1010 a monk jumped off this abbey wearing home made wings.

He glided, landed hard, and broke both legs. He wanted another go with a tail attached.

Malmesbury Abbey, Wiltshire, on the southern edge of the Cotswolds.

The carved south porch outside the door is some of the finest Norman work left in England, and it's free to stand and look at.

20 minutes off the M4 at junction 17.
