France just made something illegal that most companies have relied on for decades.

Designing products to fail early on purpose, known as planned obsolescence, is now a criminal offence in France.

That means if a company is proven to intentionally shorten the lifespan of a product just to make people buy more, it can face serious penalties including large fines and even prison time in extreme cases.

This law was introduced as part of France’s push for more sustainable consumption and the “right to repair,” aiming to stop the culture of constantly replacing devices that could have lasted much longer.

It targets things like hidden design tricks that weaken durability, software limits that slow older devices, and barriers that make repair harder than replacement.

Supporters say it is a step toward reducing waste and forcing companies to build products that actually last. Critics argue it is difficult to enforce because proving intent is not easy.

Either way, it marks a major shift in how products are supposed to be designed in one of Europe’s biggest markets.

In simple terms, the message is clear. If you make it to break faster on purpose, that is no longer just bad design, it can be a crime.
