Our lifestyle: you probably won't read it all... but that's OK! We're only lorry drivers 😉
I see trucks pulling up minute after minute, hour after hour in a bid for the driver to find their resting spot for the night, If there's space.
Fridges, containers, flatbed, tankers, curtain siders, draw bars and all the rest.
It's been a long 13hr or 15hr day, but our 9hrs or 11hrs off start the minute we park up (the clock is ticking), we have to queue for a shower hoping there's still some hot water so we can freshen up for the next day ahead, forming another orderly queue to get a meal (if we're not already cooking out of a microwave).
Back in the cab, our curtains are drawn! We can finally start to unwind, catch up with the rest of the world, speak to our children and loved ones back at home... but our 9hrs off has now become 7hrs by the time we've got ourselves sorted, we've still got to fall asleep!
Our sleep is sometimes and often broken by the driver next to us starting at 1,2,3,4am. Their engine fires up and we can wake so quickly and easily because our subconscious mind is always wondering "Is my fuel being stolen?" "Are my curtains slashed and has the load been pinched?" Or on the odd occasion "Is someone trying to break into my cab!?", but thankfully it's just other drivers up and about at the crack of dawn doing yesterday all over again.
People say "it must be so easy!" 🤣 well food for thought... on average we'll be lucky to get a SOLID 30hrs sleep throughout the WEEK!! (Sometimes a little more but not by much) That's excluding the 70hrs we actually work during that week aswell.
I don't get to tuck my children into bed, but I do this for my children.
I don't get to cuddle and kiss my wife good night to sleep, but I do this for my wife.
I don't have a social life, there's no time!
So it's more than just a "Job", you can either hack it or you can't. It really is that simple.
"Don't stay out all week" "don't be a tramper" "you choose to do it, so stop moaning"- to name just a few of my favourites.
You're right, we don't choose any of that, we HAVE to do it, because *A- Not just anyone can do it *B- because a simple 9-5 these days doesn't earn the money (especially with the cost of living) and *C- we do it to make everyone else's life around us back at home just that little bit easier and less stressful so at the weekends, family time isn't taken for granted. ❤️ I couldn't imagine earning minimum wage on a 45hr week now, I know for a fact my family wouldn't survive.
Shout out to all my fellow long distance lorry drivers 💪 safe travels, rest up and I'll pass you in the fast lane 🚛💨
