🐾 Meet Dotty, the 1 year-old Black Labrador 🐾

Dotty belongs to Mia from The Red Lion front of house team. Like Mia, she spends quite a lot of time at the pub. Unlike Mia, she doesn't even get paid to be here 😁.

Mia's dad has always been keen to ensure that Dotty is super chilled in pubs, so is always happy to pop her lead on and bring her into The Red Lion for some essential "socialisation training".

Aside from hanging out in her local, Dotty loves swimming, chewing things and enhancing the sophistication of her palette by eating anything and everything. Her party trick is the 'trust fall', where she turns her back on you and then falls back, assuming you will catch her 🥰.

Dotty lives up to her name and is absolutely bonkers. She loves people and cuddles, unless those people happen to be doing the hoovering whilst wearing hi-vis, in which case she will politely wait until you've finished and got changed before greeting you 🤣.

We are delighted to have Dotty in our pack of canine regulars and look forward to seeing her and her dad at The Red Lion bar again soon 🖤.

If you are coming to The Red Lion for lunch on Sunday from the Shipston direction, please be aware that the Lloyd’s Tour of Britain Women final stage is going through Shipston at approximately 1pm that day.

There will be rolling road closures along the route, typically lasting around 15 minutes. Traffic travelling in either direction on Church Street or Stratford Road in Shipston will be affected.

We recommend leaving a bit of extra time if you are coming to Long Compton from that direction on Sunday 23rd.

Wise words from our friends at Tails on the Trails.

It's tough being a dog owner in this heat but this is the peak day, then it starts to cool down again. Hang in there - we'll be able to walk our dogs at normal times of day again soon!

🐾 Meet Sonny the 3 year-old Boston Terrier 🐾

Sonny's owners describe him as a ray of sunshine, so he was joining lots of other rays of sunshine when he visited The Red Lion beer garden last week 🌞. This handsome boy often dresses up in a dickie bow to go out, but it's a bit hot for accessories at the moment.

When he's not chilling out and looking super cute in beer gardens, Sonny likes to play with his toys or a ball or snack on popcorn. He's very keen on cuddles but will hard pass on hoovers, moths and any paddling, swimming or bathing, thank you very much. He's also very put out by every being told 'no', so if you want to keep him sweet, make sure you let him get his own way!

We loved meeting this gorgeous boy last week and we hope he will be back to see us again soon.

Our friends at Larkswold are coming to Gamekeepers (AKA the games room) at The Red Lion next month and transforming it into a creative studio. 🎉 Wishing our wonderful Assistant Manager, Lesca, a very happy birthday 🎉

Not only can we rely on Lesca to do the rotas, reconcile the banking and run the pub when Lisa and Sarah are away, we can also rely on her for epic dressing up (both for smart nights out and fancy dress parties) and hilarious memes 😁.

We hope you have a fantastic day, Lesca. Not sure what we would do without you!

Huge congratulations to the lovely Ghillie, who won our Half Yearly Hero Hound competition for the first half of 2026.

She came to the pub with her family last week to collect her prize of a bag of goodies from some local business friends (including Byron Dog Training and Cotswold RAW) and a voucher for an overnight stay at The Red Lion.

As a wiley 11 year-old Lab, Ghillie knows where the treats are how to get her paws on them. She posed with her human sisters, Chloe and Emily, for exactly as long as it took for us to get a few in-focus shots, before breaking free and making for the gravy bones we'd bought out into the garden as a bribe 🤣.

It was a pleasure to see the family when they came in to collect Ghillie's prize and we look forward to welcoming them back when they redeem the voucher. We assume Ghillie will choose two of them as her accompanying humans for her overnight stay but you never know 🤣.

If you'd like to be in with a chance of winning a prize like this at the the end of the year, just bring your dog to the pub and let us know that you would like them to be featured as a dog. We recommend coming in at a quieter time, as Saturday nights and Sunday lunches are too busy for us to get to know your dog as well as we would like to.

🐾 Meet Rusty the 6 year-old Welsh Terrier 🐾

Rusty visited The Red Lion for a welcome pitstop after taking his humans for a walk to The Rollright Stones. When he's out and about, this inquisitive boy loves to make new friends, running up to all approaching people and completely ignoring any dogs they may have 🤣.

When he's not trying to increase his human entourage, Rusty loves chasing squirrels and stubbornly refusing to do what he's told, unless it just happens to be something he was planning on doing anyway. When we met him, he was super chilled out after his walk and was happy to pose for pictures in exchange for a gravy bone or two (but probably because he was going to do a spot of posing anyway 😁).

Today, our Assistant Manager, Lesca, completed her challenge to swim 21 miles (the distance of The Channel, but done in Shipston pool, to avoid the massive boats and other floating hazards of one of the world's busiest shipping lanes).

We'd like to say a huge congratulations to her, as she's not only swum 21 miles, she's also fitted it in around work at The Red Lion - even being the acting GM while Lisa and Sarah were on holiday recently.
