January might not have the reputation for excitement, but we’re here to change that—with some show-stopping British and Irish cheeses. Yep, you heard right. Here’s our top 5 picks to kick off the year in style:
1. Double Gloucester with Grilled Olives
A classic you don’t see nearly enough. Made with raw milk from the Appleby family’s own herd, this traditional cheese is colored naturally with annatto, a distinctive South American thistle. Aged for 16 weeks, it’s rich, buttery, and delightfully tangy—a true crowd-pleaser.
2. St Ella with Turkish Delight
One of my all-time favourites! This standout goat cheese pairs brilliantly with Turkish Delight, proving that innovative pairings are what Pick & Cheese is all about. Fun, surprising, and utterly delicious.
3. Tunworth
A classic British Camembert, and if Raymond Blanc’s praise of “the best Camembert in the world” isn’t enough to convince you, nothing will. Silky, creamy, and utterly indulgent.
4. Renegade Monk
Not for the faint-hearted, this pungent washed-rind cheese is a bold treat. Made from organic cow’s milk in Somerset and washed in ale, it delivers punchy, complex flavours that stick with you.
5. Young Buck
I may be a little biased here, but this Northern Irish gem deserves the hype. Often likened to Stilton, it’s raw milk, hand-ladled, and aged 12–15 weeks. Rich, malty, and savoury, Young Buck hits all the right notes.
