Next May James will have been gone for 20 years.
Although we’ve had 20 Christmases without you, you’ve been always with us ever since, especially around this time. We put up your old tree and baubles and feel your touch still on them. Your constant smile always baffled me and once asked you how you managed to smile all the time. Your answer was a beautiful laugh which echoes in the entire house.
The next morning I awoke to a note from you (as you so often used to do) saying:
‘A smile costs nothing, but gives much, it enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give, it takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts for ever. It brings rest to the weary, sunshine to the sad, and it is nature’s best antidote for trouble, yes, it can't be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away.(but) some people are too tired to give you a smile’

في شهر أيار/مايو المقبل، سيكون قد مضى 20 عاما على رحيل جيمس.
على الرغم من أننا أمضينا 20 عيد ميلاد بدونك يا صديقي، إلا أنك كنت دائما معنا منذ ذلك الحين، وخاصة في هذا الوقت. لقد وضعنا شجرتك القديمة وعليها زينتك، وها نحن نشعر بلمستك ما زالت عليها.

"إن الابتسامة لا تكلف شيئا، ولكنها تعطي الكثير، إنها تثري أولئك الذين يتلقونها دون أن تجعل من يتبرعون أكثر فقرا، إنها لا تستغرق سوى لحظة، لكن ذكراها تدوم أحيانا إلى الأبد. إنها تجلب الراحة للمتعب، وتجعل الشمس تشرق على الحزين، وهي أفضل ترياق طبيعي للمتاعب، نعم، لا يمكن شراءها أو استجداءها أو استعارتها أو سرقتها، فهي شيء لا يكتسب قيمته إلا حين تمنحه لأحد. (لكن) بعض الأشخاص متعبون جدا بحيث لا يمكنهم إعطائك ابتسامة"
