Grow is an independent self-organised creative space, bar, kitchen & takeaway in Hackney Wick which hosts a diverse programme celebrating and nurturing local and international creative talent. It is also part of an ecosystem of studios founded in 2007. An Experiment in Ethical and Sustainable Business

Since 2014, our aim is to remove financial barriers to extend opportunities to enjoy a creative and nurturing environment whilst exploring ecological and social sustainability. We ask the question: Is it possible to be a financially sustainable enterprise in London whilst:

- Using eco-electricty; eco cleaning and recycled products
- Sourcing locally and sustainably wherever possible
- Working in partnership with independent and ethical enterprises wherever possible
- Using organic, fairtrade and locally sourced food and drink wherever possible
- Offering free entry (or affordable) events to share music, art and the ideas and stategy of putting people and planet over profit

Grow Live joins the EFG London Jazz Festival this November 13th with two live bands followed by a the club session through to 2am. Celebrating the wide spectrum of the sounds of Jazz.

Lisbon-born pianist, composer and arranger Vicente Magalhães bring his eight-piece project to Grow, with original compositions moving between tightly arranged ensemble playing and open improvisation.

Also live, drummer and percussionist Diggory Wood is joined by Sam Johnson on piano and Georgia Johnson on double bass for a trio built around interplay, experimentation and leaving room for the unexpected.

LAANI then takes over for the club session, bringing nu-jazz, broken beat, Afro rhythms, neo-soul and house. A regular across London’s jazz and club scenes, her sets have taken her from Fabric and Ronnie Scott’s to We Out Here, Montreux Jazz Festival and Worldwide Festival.

Free before 9pm / £5 + £7 advance on DICE / £10 on the door.

We caught up with Rick Vayo ahead of his live show with us on 3rd October joining Declan Cosgrove / CSGRV &
demacque.

He’s one half of Tapefeed, fabric resident and co-label owner of Inveterate as well as teaching music production and sound design. He’s been producing and performing for over a decade around the globe at clubs and festivals and regularly at the infamous fabric. We’re very excited to have him throwing down a 90 minute live show with his two Octatracks. Expect groove, tribale percussion and fun on the dancefloor. If you know Rick just for his techno side this is a real treat.

Alongside the Classic Gin Negroni, Mezcal Negroni and Sbagliato we alrady serve, we’ve added a few extra riffs for Negroni Week to celebrate what some would say is the best cocktail ever created. So calling all Negroni fans, come try one and let us know which is your favourite and if normal Negronis aren’t your thing, maybe you’ll discover something new.

Boulevardier
A Negroni’s whiskey-drinking cousin. Bourbon in place of gin, making it richer, warmer and a little bit smoother.

Gloria
Somewhere between a Negroni and a Martini. Lighter and brighter, with Cointreau, less Campari and more of the gin and dry vermouth coming through.

Porto
Pretty much what it sounds like. Port brings a richer, sweeter side to the Negroni. One we might have to keep around for winter.

Dirty Negroni
A Negroni, but dirty. Gin, Campari, vermouth, a touch of olive brine and a few olives for good measure.

Nalin likes all of them, which is particularly impressive considering we’re fairly sure he doesn’t actually like Negronis.

Brazil + Africa is back on Saturday 17th October.

Following the packed-out last session, volta45 invites back Joe Davis, founder of@farout_recordings, for a night tracing the deep musical links between Africa and Brazil.

For over 30 years, Joe has been one of the key figures championing Brazilian music internationally through Far Out, working with artists including Azymuth, Marcos Valle, Joyce Moreno, Arthur Verocai and Hermeto Pascoal.

Alongside Volta45’s deep knowledge of West African and diasporic music, they’ll be digging through Brazilian jazz, samba, funk and MPB, highlife, Afrobeat and plenty that sits between.

A rare chance to hear these records in conversation with each other, played by two people who have spent years digging, collecting and living with the music.
