The Labworth building on Canvey Island is an iconic slice of 20th-century history. Built in 1932–33 as the Canvey Island Café, it was designed by pioneering engineer Ove Arup in the modernist International style, inspired to resemble the bridge of the Queen Mary. 

Overlooking the Thames Estuary at Labworth Beach, the reinforced concrete café became a landmark of the island’s seaside heyday. After decades of decline and near demolition during sea defence works, it was granted Grade II listed status in 1996 and lovingly restored. 

Today it thrives as the Labworth Beach Cafe and Sapore Italian Reaturant, celebrating both its architectural pedigree and Canvey’s rich coastal heritage.

As we prepare for our final week of pre-booked Christmas lunches , this is a reminder of our opening times over the Christmas and New Year period 🎄
We continue to serve breakfast from 9am till 11:30am from Wednesday this week ( no reservation needed ) till Monday 22nd December .
We will then be closed Tuesday 23rd December to Friday 26th December .. back open with our normal breakfast and lunch menu on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th December .
Closed Monday 29th to Friday 2nd January
Back to normal on Saturday 3rd January.

We have been completely overwhelmed at how popular , and how quickly we have filled up our Christmas lunches this year !! It has been a busy two weeks taking all of your reservations , but now we can announce that we are fully booked for December 🎄🎉
We will continue to open for breakfast as normal throughout December from 9am to 11:30am .
