There’s something comforting about a fresh cup of coffee and a piece of good shortbread.

With the sunshine sticking around, many of us are making the most of eating outdoors.

A few years ago, while visiting the beautiful Greek island of Alonissos, we picked up a tip that we've never forgotten.

When we sat down for lunch on the beach, we noticed the restaurant burning used coffee grounds. It wasn't for the smell (although it was rather pleasant!) – it was to help keep the wasps and mosquitoes away.

It turns out that many insects have a very strong sense of smell, and the aroma from smouldering coffee grounds is something they'd rather avoid.

If you'd like to give it a try at home, make sure your used coffee grounds are completely dry, pop them into a heatproof dish, and light them so they gently smoulder, rather like incense.

A simple way to reuse something that would otherwise go in the bin – and it might just make those summer lunches a little more peaceful.

If you still need your caffeine in the heatwave, how about making coffee ice cubes to add to your iced coffee?

Simply pour brewed coffee into an ice cube tray and freeze!

Then add the coffee cubes to your chilled coffee to keep it cold without diluting the flavour, or drop a few into cold milk for an easy iced latte.

A simple way to stay cool and keep the coffee flowing.

☕ A Small Update About Our Takeaway Coffee ☕

We've managed to hold our takeaway coffee prices for quite some time.

Unfortunately, rent has gone up. Rates have gone up. Electricity has gone up. Service costs have gone up. In fact, it sometimes feels like everything except the weather has become more expensive.

As a result, our takeaway coffee prices will be increasing slightly.

The good news? The coffee will still be freshly roasted, carefully prepared and served with the same friendly chat (whether you wanted one or not 😉).

We've never believed in cutting corners, and we'd much rather continue serving the quality coffee you know and enjoy than compromise on what's in the cup.

Even with this increase, our takeaway coffees remain less expensive than many you'll find elsewhere, while still being made with the same care, quality and attention we've always believed in.

Thank you for supporting an independent family business. Every coffee you buy helps keep the roasters roasting, the lights on, and our little corner of the high street going strong.

We genuinely appreciate it.

Most people use wallpaper. We use coffee sacks. ☕️

Over the years, we've collected sacks from coffee-growing regions around the world, and when our walls needed a little attention, they seemed far too interesting to hide away. Every sack has travelled thousands of miles before finding its final home here in the shop.

Next time you're in, have a look and see how many different origins you can spot.
