Following the death of her husband, Dick Burge, in 1918, Bella Burge took over The Ring boxing venue, at the age of 41. Honouring a promise she had made to her husband on his deathbed, she stood before the crowd and declared that she would run the venue herself.

At a time when women rarely held positions of authority, especially in the male-dominated world of boxing, many doubted her ability to succeed. Financial difficulties were severe, and Bella even pawned her jewellery to pay staff wages. Yet she persevered, introducing improvements to the venue, retaining loyal staff, and keeping boxing accessible to working-class audiences.

Through determination, resilience, and strong leadership, Bella not only saved The Ring but also became one of the first women in Britain to run a major boxing operation. It was during this period that she earned the nickname “Bella of Blackfriars” - a title that reflected the respect she came to command in the boxing world.
