Come and try my delicious pakoras made with organic spinach, onions and peppers and served with a dipping sauce and a fresh spicy chutney. From October I make a spicy Indian soup, hot or to take home. I also make various curries such as free range Chicken and organic beef kofta to take home and heat up. The potatoes in the photo are made with garlic, fresh green chillie, fresh coriander and lemon

juice. We are at Parliament hill farmers market (by the heath near Gospel oak lido) on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturday of the month.

Here, finally, is the no. 1 in my favourite recipe books of all time list. This is the original cookbook, the one that started it all. Well, the person who really started it all was my mother. She was a brilliant and intuitive cook and I still remember eating her chicken curry, aloo tikki, dhal and rice puddings as if it were yesterday. I only started cooking Indian food properly when I went to university and was given a copy of this book. Madhur Jaffrey wasn’t yet a national institution - this was her fist cookbook - but she had been my aunt for a time before that (while married to my uncle Saeed) so I was particularly drawn to it when it came out. As you can tell from the well thumbed and stained pages, I have used this book both personally and professionally ever since. The green soup (photo 2) was a firm favourite at my first farmer’s market stall in London in Stoke Newington and pic 3 is one of the chicken dishes I used to cook at university (in my pre veggie days) to impress women. Sad but true. Old cookery books are like old friends, and, when well written, never go out of fashion. They also become mementoes of different eras in your life. Leafing through this one, for instance, immediately conjures up images of my university days and the period in my life when I first grasped how to use spices together properly. What a satisfying and exciting moment that was!
