With 20 years experience of patiently finding a bridge to the gap, teaching the basic hand to mouth (relaxed) eating techniques we have carefully helped hundreds of sufferers to learn how to eat freely having suffered first hand with beige processed foods for 14 years.
Those with stronger character have been carefully selected to raise human awareness of this highly misunderstood, dangerous eating disorder which affects families across the globe and limits a persons health, functioning and ability to connect with others via food.
The word Fussy is unnecessary and one reason that health practitioners get it wrong. Fussy implies being finicky or having a choice, as a phobia of what food might taste like there is no choice.
It’s NOT Anorexia, my sleepless nights often involve thoughts of my fellow sufferers being influenced into believing their ARFID is Anorexia, a diagnosis of Anorexia will get your child sectioned, tranquillised and heavy handedly pressurised into eating something that they have no understanding of what it tastes like.
There is pressure from the public for the NHS to at least do something about the epidemic of ARFID but this route will make it many times worse - ignorance makes it worse.
How We Help:
Kind, fun, empathic therapies that work to empower children to own their phobia learned at 18mo (normally). Graded desensitisation, cbt, nlp, learning to try foods, to open hearts and good old moral support do just fine
We recommend six fun bite sized weekly 1.5 hr zoom sessions at home with controlled systematic desensitisation and gradual exposure during the session (which we would recommend & suggest) to give each person enough session time to develop confidence in trying and form a food vocabulary to the final stages and goal - to eat freely.
We work from the patients perspectives and using cbt techniques allow a person to look from differing perspectives based on logic.
Dos and Donts
* Do not try to fix it yourself - it needs an expert versed in ARFID language and self talk to help them reframe fears and know when the anxiety is present.
* Avoid emotion. Emotional pleading, blackmailing are all unhelpful
* All food is good food, every mealtime is hard when we only know a few foods, we all need food so before treatment help your child or partner by not commenting help them feel relaxed distractions are helpful.
* Do not fear monger about health risks will lead to feelings of more pressure.
* Do protect your child from well meaning family members that mention mortality based facts or try to ‘fix us’ with force
* Do educate on the benefits of the right therapy
* Don’t join forums online that aren’t helpful or suggest that ARFID is incurable
* Do have hope
* Do relaxation techniques YouTube meditations that relax a person this will help develop the confidence to eat & attain the eating state.
* Do purchase this mP4 specific to learning the skill of Rest & Digest
https://www.kilmurrylifecentre.com/product/neophobia/
Do: introduce and invite conversation about food in a calm way following the mp4 with smiles, reassurance and without pressure.
When we work with adults with ARFID/ binge eating issues we in a similar light but marginally more direct way.
