THE FOX FILES • 2: BEFORE THE G&T
There was a time when you couldn’t order a gin at the Fox.
Long celebrated as London’s last ale house, the pub could sell b**r and w**e, but no spirits. Contemporary reporting records the change in August 1999. Quite a moment for a little corner pub!
There’s a showbusiness connection too. A 1999 London Drinker report recalls the Fox being run by comedian Dickie Henderson’s family in the 1940s. Later, Lionel Wells and his daughter Diane Harvey helped keep the b**rhouse tradition alive.
Different families, familiar doors. Here’s another photograph from our archive. Do you remember the Fox before spirits arrived?
Chelsea History Festival is on until Sunday. After the talks and walks, come and find a little local history at 29 Passmore Street, Belgravia, just behind Sloane Square.
