I’ve been thinking a lot about VAT for the past eight years, and I’m fully behind , and .

People often assume that a VAT reduction would simply mean more profit for restaurant owners. For us, it wouldn’t.

If VAT was reduced to 10%, here’s what I’d do:

1️⃣ I’d reduce the price of some of our best-selling items to make eating out more accessible. Pints, house wine, soft drinks. I’d love for someone to be able to enjoy a drink and a pizza for under £15. More customers, more VAT (even at a lower rate). And with cheaper prices the customers we do already have might have the starter or a dessert or a side. More revenue, more VAT.

2️⃣ I’d hire another member of staff. Since 2020 we’ve gone from 14 team members to 8, yet our payroll is higher than ever. I’d love to give my team more support, create opportunities for young people and students, and maybe even stop working 70-hour weeks myself.

3️⃣ I’d invest in local marketing. Even £200 a month would help us reach more people and spend less time hand-writing leaflets.

4️⃣ I’d take the team out for a modest staff party. We regularly do 80 covers on an evening with four staff members in the whole building. They’re incredible.

And at the end of the year, there’d still be nothing left over. The honest truth is I will never make back what I put in without even starting to think about the hours I’ve worked for free, the events I’ve missed, the stress on my body and mind. But I’m ok with that, I do it because I love it.

All we’re asking for is more affordable hospitality. More jobs. Better supported staff. More money circulating in local communities and VAT actually holding us back.

I don’t mean to be rude but since the tube strikes started 5? years ago not one of my core team hasn’t shown up to work. Generally they’re early.
Sometimes that involves 3 hour buses from Ilford, cycling, running for the bus just not to be let on (which is against all of my morals), walking for two hours in the pouring rain, running, getting taxis that cost more than our daily salary. We show up every single time and then get let down every single time. It’s quite heartbreaking. Especially for people working 45/55/65 hour weeks. So far we’ve had more than 150 covers cancel this week, I estimate over the few years I’ve lost between 150 and 200k in revenue from cancelled events, no shows all because of the tube strikes. I still have to pay wages and overheads. What more should hospitality have to deal with? The people who can change this don’t care; they’re working from home at their leather desk in their PJs but it’s the normal hardworking people that suffer. It’s people who work by the hour, students and casual staff.
Anyway we’ll try and make today useful- we have binbags of wild garlic and some empty jars. What are you doing with your days off
If you’re not a striking tube driver and around do pop in! 🩷
