Located in the heart of Blackfriars since 1875, the Blackfriar is a historic restaurant housed in an iconic building. Its unique wedge-shaped structure, adorned with mosaics, ornamental balconies and the famous guardian black friar above the front door, is a sight to behold. Originally built on the grounds of a Dominican friary, the building underwent a redesign in the early 1900s, resulting in stunning internal decoration featuring sculptures, mosaics and relics depicting cheerful friars. Adding to its charm, the restaurant boasts a snack bar constructed between 1917 and 1921, nestled beneath a neighbouring railway line. Visitors are captivated by its barrel-vaulted ceiling, which has become a beloved attraction. The Blackfriar holds a special place in history, having been saved from redevelopment in the 1960s thanks to a campaign led by Sir John Betjeman. So, as you raise a glass to toast your visit, take a moment to honour the man who fought to preserve this remarkable piece of history.
