Grow; Day 3

Today we said goodbye to L’Antigua with another trot up to the viewing point at Cerro de la Cruz.

A final cupping session of experimental lots from central and South America, a conversational gathering on sustainability and best practices for improving or learning about improvements around coffee production and waste management. As well as seeing a presentation on the continued efforts of social programmes already benefiting coffee communities.

We then headed to a tasting of fruit and chocolate grown, sourced or manufactured in Guatemala. Which made it pretty clear that we don’t really understand fruit and its variants on the other side of the globe.

Tomorrow we visit a farm and see a processing plant…

Grow; Day 2

We started the day with a short hike to Cerro de la Cruz and breath taking views one of the local volcanoes…

Quick story: Antigua Guatemala (old Guatemala) used to be the capital city, until heavy rains that gathered at the volcano, burst and caused a flood, resulting in the capital to be moved to what is now Guatemala City, and at the same time gave the volcano its name; Volcán de Agua (water volcano)

We then had discussions on sustainability within the coffee industry, conversations with local farmers, roasters and an advocate of an organisation who are committed to supporting local farmers and their families with education, training, nutritional assistance and vocational skills.

We also had the chance throughout the day to cup regional coffee and micro lots from central and South America, as well as, some single farm micro lots from local Guatemalan coffee farmers.

Grow; Day 1

After landing in Guatemala and a short rest in the city, we headed out to Antigua where we will be engaged in sessions focused around learning, discussions on sustainability and the future of specialty coffee.

Always such a privilege and a humbling experience to be able to visit the places our simple morning drink comes from and to share the skill, heritage, effort and care that goes into an age old tradition where it meets modern innovation and creativity.

Farmer panels, various microlot cuppings, and a trip to a coffee farm still to come as well as an opportunity to try some of the other local produce from Guatemala.
