Back from Easter break with a refreshed menu for spring summer season & a restock of our chilli sauce and chilli oil jars 🌶️

We’ll be serving the Bun Cha Hai - our version of the classic bun cha from Hanoi. We’ve also added the option of adding a crab+prawn spring roll to any of our Bun noodle salads.

Other updates include more summer rolls (Pork & chicken variations available) & you can choose which sauce you’d like them to be served with when you dine in

We’ve also got a bunch more specials planned in the coming month so stay tuned for updates 🙏

🥚🌿 Easter closing dates 🌿🥚
We’ll be closed from 2nd - 15th April for a short Easter break 🙏

Taking time to refresh the menu for spring/summer & little bits of maintenance around the cafe! We’ll also be making a new batch of chilli sauce jars ready when we’re back🌶️🫙

Chúc mừng năm mới & An khang thịnh vượng 🧧🎆🏮Wishing you all safety & prosperity in the year of the fire horse 🐴 🔥 Mama Hai has been busy putting up all new decorations around the cafe to bring in the new year✨

We are also marking the occasion with a couple of specials on the menu this week- it also happens to be Valentines this weekend 💕 so double the celebrations!

Specials running this week are:
Small Crab and prawn spring roll in lettuce wrap - £3
Seabass banh mi - £9 takeaway, £12 dine in

Well also have the usual banh mi this week!

Recap of a busy January at Hai Cafe thanks to everyone who came out in the cold 🥶 and wet ☂️
We crafted a load of specials this month & really enjoyed seeing everyone come out & sample some of the new dishes!

🎇 Back & refreshed from our December Asia food tour- wishing everyone a Happy New Year 2026 🎉 We’ll be back open as normal from January 2nd 🗓️📣

Mama Hai & family very much enjoyed the extended trip overseas. It was her first time visiting both Japan & South Korea - so lots of new food experiences under the belt 🦀

The Vietnam leg of the trip involved an extended leg in Hanoi before taking the train down to Hải Phòng & a hometown visit to Hải Dương. Copious amounts of noodles, soups & rice were had & we’ve got a bunch more dishes planned for specials this year!

Hope you enjoy the little photo memories slideshow of the trip - with some location names where we can remember! We’ll be sharing some more memories later on including Mama Hai being invited to learn some Banh cuon making technique in somebody’s own home!

In the meantime hope you have some lovely new years celebration & maybe see you for a steaming bowl of Pho 🍜 this weekend!

As we enter our last week before winter break we’ve been reflecting back on 2025 which has been a year filled with lots of new experiences! here’s a selection of photos from this year in insta slide form in rough order:

- One of final Mama Hai fruit bowl arrangements of the year - Xmas edition (plus some bonus new year arrangements from earlier this year)
- Banh cuon, summer roll & fruit from Hai Duong home town
- Supper club and market stall pop up events with zao an collective

- Attempted star formation team😆
- First full year with the new layout & wooden counter setup 🪚
- Some of the specials we ran this year (Cha la lot bun , Cha ca la vong & Bun Rieu which is still on!)

This will be our last week open before we close in December for an extended winter trip back to Vietnam 🇻🇳 We’ll be back in January, with some new recipes in the suitcases & refreshed for the new year! Wishing everyone a happy holiday & a wonderful start to 2026 🎇🎆

We are back open this week after our annual August summer break ☀️ Hope everyone has had a beautiful summer so far 🙏

The month of August was happily spent tending to as many bbq’s as possible & sampling the delights of the British seaside 🎏🍤

We’ve also been busy working on the new seasons special dish, which you can find on the updated menu for the season! Come try the Bun Bo Hai (our version of bun bo hue) when you next have a craving for some soup 🍜

We are now closed for our annual summer break - don’t worry, we’ll be back in September!

Big Thanks to everyone who stopped by in our last week open - even with all the ☔️🌧️🌧️ on our Saturday lunchtime special, we still managed to sell out of all the Banh mi 🥖🥖

Happy Easter bank holiday everyone 🥚🥚Just announcing we are closed now for a short break & spring clean - back in early May 🌿

It’s been a v busy start to the year with a couple pop up events with ESEACC under the belt (more pics & full post to come!) & finally fully settling into the new cafe layout. We can’t wait for it to get even warmer so we can have the front doors flung fully open ☀️

We’ll be using this break to do some much needed maintenance & brew up more jars of chilli sauce for spring. Mama hai has already made it out to visit some great british car boot sales (last pic) We hope you have some lovely plans afoot too!

x presents: a one night pop up dinner event on Thursday 13th March

We are very excited to announce we’ll be temporarily leaving Clapton for one night to take over the Zao A cafe space in the newly renovated ESEA Community Centre! This will be our first pop up dinner so we’ve prepared a delicious menu for the occasion ⭐️📋

We can’t wait to host you at this special venue - which originally was the home of the An Viet foundation & Vietnamese restaurant. It’s a bit of a full circle ⭕️ moment for us as the An Viet foundation was integral in providing community services for us as a family over 3 decades ago. So it’s great to see it reborn as the new ESEA Community Centre continuing to provide much needed support for the wider community!

Happy lunar new year - wishing you all safety & prosperity in the upcoming year of the snake 🐍

Mama Hai has been busy putting up her various traditional Tết decorations - the Hoa Đào (Peach blossoms) are looking glorious indeed!

We’ll be open as normal this week from Thursday - Saturday - 6-10pm. Pro-tip for walk ins we usually have tables from 8pm on Thursdays 😉

It’s been quite a year for change at the cafe - as most of you may have already witnessed seen we went about reconfiguring the layout and doing our first proper renovation last summer and have been settling in to the new space ever since. Thanks to our electrician neighbour ⚡️& the lovely carpenter duo (Sahill & Ishmael) who helped us get the new counter up and running 🛠️

We’ve got lots of plans bubbling in the background this year - which we’ll talk about very soon!

📷 Photos from last wedneaday’s Late night Lower Clapton shopping event. We made a special snack menu for the occasion 🥢

🫶 Huge Thanks to everyone who popped by to sample some of the specials we had on the night! Was lovely seeing so many familiar faces & the menu went down a storm! Also big thanks to all our lovely neighbours who took part - we think this could be the start of something new!

Mama Hai prepped lots of new dishes on the night some of which may sneak onto the main menu next year 😉

> Bún chả OG & Hai style - thin strips of lemongrass pork grilled served with Nem Cuốn & Chạo tôm (grilled prawn on sugarcane stick)
> Handmade Bánh cuốn (northern vietnamese rice roll - a real textural delight) served with Nem Cuốn & Chạo tôm
> 🐟Mini Sea Bass Bánh mì - the perfect fish sandwich, sea bass cooked in fragrant ginger & lemongrass sauce
> Bánh rán - deep fried sweet doughnut balls. A classic combination of yellow mung bean, coconut & glutinous rice pastry

What a great note to end this year on - we are now on a break over the festive holidays & will be back in early Jan. Wishing everyone a happy new year & happy holidays 🙏🎄

This Wednesday 11th December 🗓️ we’ll be opening up from 6-9pm as part of the Lower Clapton Road shopping event 🎈we are a part of with all our lovely neighbours on lower Clapton road!

We’ve made a special snack menu especially for the night! Drop in & try some of the specials on the night menu.

Featuring:

Banh Ran - a Vietnamese filled doughnut ball. This street food usually comes in either a savoury or a sweet version in vietnam. We’ll be serving the sweet version on the night! The shell is a deep fried Glutinous rice flour & it will be filled with a delicious sweet yellow mung bean paste. This is a must try sweet snack! 🥠🥠

Sea bass banh mi 🥖🐟- sea bass cooked in our special sauce served in a small baguette with herbs & pickles

Scallop banh mi 🥖🦪- cooked well done scallops in special sauce served in a small baguette with herbs & pickles

Summer Rolls - A selection of our usual summer rolls from the main menu available on the night.

We’ll also have jars of our home made Chilli oil & Chilli sambal sauce available to buy 🫙🌶️🌶️
