INTERNATIONAL TEA DAY

Today, on International Tea Day, we celebrate 40 years of tea at H.R.Higgins.

Tea was introduced to the company in 1986 by David Higgins following his tea apprenticeship with a London tea importer. Four decades later, tea remains an important part of life at Duke Street, with collections sourced and blended with the same care that has defined H.R.Higgins since 1942.

To mark the occasion, we are pleased to introduce three new additions to the collection:

Lemongrass & Ginger
Fresh citrus and lemongrass, warming ginger spice and soft orange sweetness.

Moroccan Mint
Fresh mint and green tea, light tangy brightness and gentle sweetness.

Wild Berry
Blackcurrant and blueberry, ripe berry fruits and a touch of citrus brightness.

Available now online and in Mayfair.

NINGA WASHING STATION

Behind every cup of Burundi Giku Hill is an extraordinary amount of work, patience and precision.

These photographs from Ninga Washing Station capture part of that journey. Coffee cherries arriving from the surrounding hillsides, careful washing and sorting, and parchment spread beneath the Burundian sun to dry.

It is easy to speak about tasting notes, but coffees like this are equally shaped by people, place and process.

Burundi Giku Hill continues to be served in Mayfair and is available online for a limited time.

Have you tried it yet?

AUDREY HIGGINS

Before she became director and company secretary of H.R.Higgins, Audrey Higgins was a young woman stepping out of Bond Street Underground station during the Second World War, hoping that her father and the business had survived another night of bombing.

In 1942, aged just sixteen, Audrey joined Harold Higgins at the very beginning of H.R.Higgins. From roasting rooms in South Molton Street to Duke Street in Mayfair, she became part of every aspect of the business.

She packed and delivered coffee across London by bus and underground, managed accounts by hand, served customers, lectured on coffee and later travelled to visit suppliers in East Africa. Customers knew her simply as “Miss Audrey”.

Her life spanned some of the most important decades in British coffee culture, from post-war rationing to the rise of the modern coffee house.

Through dedication, warmth and an unwavering belief in the business her father built, Audrey Higgins helped shape H.R.Higgins into the company it remains today.

Right from coffee’s discovery in the 1500s, there have been those whose passion and devotion have earned them a place in coffee history. Audrey Higgins must surely be one of them.
