This post is about how to engage people in activism. After many years as an activist of one kind of another I have come to the conclusion that people usually don’t change their behaviour because of socio-economics not a lack of morals or will power. The social side is largely driven by a need for social acceptance and the fear (a real physiological fear that isn’t acknowledged enough) of losing it when we speak up about things that are wrong.
We cannot engage people in debate about economics and politics until they feel safe enough to share their real opinions. This means that activism is really all about making friends with people different to ourselves, building relationships with people even when we disagree, understanding different perspectives and creating community. Creating real community can be pretty uncomfortable but this part needs to happen before the rest. I call it strategic activism and the goal is also to make it fun and appealing.
I am setting up The Liberation Club to help us do this and I am starting to run events as part of the offering. Due to a lack of resources, I’m starting really, really small with picnics and games.
If you’re in London, I’d love you to come along. It would be great to have some support but more than that I hope you’d find these events appealing as a way of meeting like-minded people.
Here is a link to those that are planned: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/theliberationclub
A good way to find out about future events is to subscribe to the waiting list on Substack via the website (the actual club should be opening in September): https://theliberationclub.org/elementor-1021/
I am also very keen to work collaboratively with others to run more events so let me know if that appeals to you as well 🙂
