Curry Mahal Putney

Curry Mahal Putney ABOUT US:

The Curry Mahal was established in 1971 before the recognition of Bangladesh as an independent country. Himmat was the star attraction.

The Curry Mahal has evolved and adapted its tastes and trends over many decades to the demands of its patrons. However, its core aim has remained the same; to provide good food, at great value. The history of the restaurant is quite unique as it is the first and oldest Bangladeshi restaurant in the country. For over forty years the key driving force for the restaurant success has been in providing

a personal and friendly service to its patrons. We invite you to come and savour the flavours of real Bangladeshi cuisine. ABOUT OUR CHEF:

Throughout the years Bangladesh Curry Mahal has earned a reputation which is synonymous with fine dining. We offer our patrons the ultimate experience in Bangladeshi cuisine. The core of the Curry Mahal lies with its Head Chef and we are happy to announce that we have Himmat Singh on board to carry on the strong traditions. With over twenty years of experience, Himmat started his career in India working at some of India’s greatest restaurants. He finally took the lead role in the prestigious Grand Oberoi 5 Star Hotel in India. It was there that his creative flair was spotted and soon he became a magnet for the discerning patrons of real Indian cuisine. After working in India for over ten years, in 2000, Himmat decided to broaden his horizons by bringing his creativity to Britain. Initially Himmat worked for a select number of well-known Indian restaurants, including the Cinnamon club, to discover the nuances of the British taste. The Curry Mahal, in somewhat of a coup, persuaded Himmat to join its team as Head Chef. We look forward to bringing our patrons traditional Bangladeshi cuisine with the creativity that Himmat offers.

Just the perfect bed - (Maybe a chilli or two though)

I hate when waiters ask, "Are you done with that?" When the plate is completely clear. Like nah, imma eat the plate too.

Chillies:

You may not believe this, but it was the British that introduced chillies to India. Chillies originated from South America. Before chillies were introduced people in the Indian sub-continent used black pepper extensively in their cooking.

Since their introduction, their popularity has crept into many of the modern ‘authentic’ Indian dishes. The influence of the British upon Indian food is therefore quite substantial and Indian food today is very different to what was cooked over 240 years ago, pre-colonisation.

Vindaloo:

The traditional Indian restaurant dish that we serve in this establishment, and many others across Britain, which also was the title of a popular song for beered up lads in the nineties, is a dish whose name originated from the city of Goa. This dish over here is known as Vindaloo.

The original Goan dish was called Vihna d’Aloo, which comes from the words wine and garlic. In this establishment, and many others around Britain, it seems that somewhere down the line, the original name and ingredients have been changed to what we know as a Vindaloo over here.

The Indian chefs in Britain interpreted the last part of the word to mean aloo – the word for potato. Hence you will find potato in a Vindaloo. We are sure that in Goa a Vinha d’Aloo is a very different dish in taste but still hot.

Traditionally, rice is cooked in water and the excess water with the excess starch is drained away. This is a healthy way of cooking rice. When it comes to the aromatic and delicious Basmati, the quantity of rice is balanced with the water used for cooking so that there is no water left to strain away once the rice is cooked. This preserves the rich flavor and taste of Basmati.
