Esarn Kheaw Thai Restaurant

Esarn Kheaw Thai Restaurant Esarn Kheaw Thai Restaurant is the first North East style restaurant opened in London. (Ubon Ratchathani Province). This was his first job abroad as a Chef.

Established since 1992, it is a family run business which keeps Thai food as traditional as they can. Once upon a time, a long time ago, Mr Puntar was living by the paddy fields in the Northeast of Thailand. Around 1968 Mr Puntar became a member of the "Bangkok Officer Open Mess" in the "Chao Phraya Hotel" in Bangkok. His position was an assistant cook where he learnt the basics of being a good chef. In 1974 he applied for work in England to work with the "Trust House Forte Hotel LTD". By September 1974 he was able to come to England to work at the "Imperial Hotel" in Torquay, Devon. After two months, he transferred to work at the "Kensington Close Hotel" in central London as a sauce chef. During his time there he was able to work with different tools and learnt different skills. In 1977, he filled out an application to work at " Intercontinental Hotel", Park Lane. His application was accepted and this was where his career as a professional chef began. He started as a demi chef de party and after one year, he was promoted to a chef de party. Soon after, Mr and Mrs Puntar married and Mrs Puntar followed her husband to England to pursue his career as a professional chef. While in Thailand Mrs Puntar was a teacher and learnt all her cooking skills from her mother and sisters. By July 1987, Mr Puntar received an "Outstanding Employee Award." Because of his hard work he was promoted to sus chef. This meant responsibility and teamwork. He worked at "Intercontinental Hotel" for sixteen years as a sus chef. Meanwhile, Mrs Puntar was the chef at home. She would often cook for friends and family hosting regular dinner parties. She was always complimented on her amazing food and hospitality. In 1992, after many years of perseverance and patience, Mr and Mrs Puntar finally opened their very own restaurant which is known to you as "Esarn Kheaw". In 1993, Mr Puntar resigned from "Intercontinental Hotel" to continue his responsibility within his family business. Mrs Puntar has taken the role of head chef at "Esarn Kheaw". Together they created all the recipes on our menu for you to enjoy, which reminds them of their childhood in Ubon, Thailand. Expect to see a new generation of Puntar's continuing the family business to keep your bellies happy and our family recipes alive.

Our Chicken Drumettes are marinated just right, steamed to lock in that goodness, then deep-fried fresh to order.

Pair it with sticky rice and eat it the Esarn way hands only.

And of course, wash it all down with our homemade Thai iced tea.

This is the combo you didn’t know you needed.

Growing up, our parents always instilled in us the value of hard work. Our dad has always been the one who doesn’t all, a true handyman, fixing anything and everything he could while also being whatever else the business needed. That work ethic naturally trickled down to us.

Now, we’re seeing the third generation step in, eager to be part of the journey and proud to help wherever they can. All of our children love getting involved and our oldest daughter is now at an age where her help truly makes a difference. Watching her learn alongside her parents and granddad has been incredibly special.

When the next generation is taught and trusted,
the family business lives on 🤍

David learned staple recipes from our late mother.
For nearly two years, he cooked side by side with her,
learning the love and care behind every dish.

Today, he continues learning from dad,
who stands beside him every step of the way.
This is how our family’s food lives on. With dad’s guidance,
he continues our family’s journey, one dish at a time.

We’ve never shied away from our family roots. Our mum and dad, the founders, grew up in a small village in Ubon Ratchathani and they always reminded us to be proud of where our roots come from. Even after moving to the UK over 40 years ago, they made sure Thai culture stayed alive in our home.

Though the next generation of owners were born in the UK, we proudly say we’re Thai with our own twist. And now, even the third generation celebrates the many cultures that make up who they are.

Whenever we visit our parents’ hometown, we’re met with warmth, love, laughter and that special sense of togetherness. Family dinners are never without bold flavours and joyful chaos and that’s exactly what we want to share with you. The flavours… undeniably brilliant.

Bringing people together through food is at the heart of our customer experience. We work hard to keep our dishes as authentic as possible using the ingredients available here in the UK.

Our hope is that each bite transports you to that little village where our parents grew up, or to a roadside stall serving unforgettable curries and stir fries. Our relaxed atmosphere is part of that journey, a warm welcome into our family dinner table. Everyone is welcome. Let’s dig in!

เนื้อน้ำตก
Beef North East Style “Neau Nam Tok”

🌟 DID YOU KNOW? 🌟

“Neau Nam Tok” is a Northeastern Thai dish with roots in the region’s tradition of grilling meat. The name “น้ำตก” (Nam Tok) literally means waterfall, referring to the juices that drip from the beef as it cooks, creating a smoky aroma that defines the dish.

It’s closely related to laab, another famous Isaan salad, but Nam Tok is distinct because it uses grilled beef rather than minced meat. The signature ground toasted rice, herbs and chilli reflect the region’s culinary style, bold, rustic and aromatic.

It’s one of our most popular dishes and rightly so.

Also available with pork, chicken or duck.

BONUS FACT: Authentic village style includes “น้ำดี” (nam di), bile. It adds a distinct bitter flavour. (We do not include this due to safety regulations and hygiene standards, but if you travel to rural parts of the Isaan region, be aware, they may still include this ingredient.)

When we opened our restaurant on 19.09.1992, we received a heartfelt gift, a treasured painting that has stayed with us ever since. The artist spent time with our parents, listening to their story, their sacrifices and their hopes for the future. What they created is more than art; it’s our family’s story told through colour and brushstrokes.

“Sticky rice comes from rice fields back home similar to where we grew up. It’s grown by the hands of families, harvested with love and eventually brought here to be part of your meal. It’s a reminder of our beginnings, of who we are and where we come from. This is our history and sharing our signature sticky rice with you keeps that history alive.” — Dad/Granddad
