Just wanted to address a few comments that were picked up on the Cake Shed camera today regarding my prices which has actually upset me a bit. (Normally have a tough skin, you will always get one or two that don't get it)
I completely understand that everyone has different budgets, and there will always be people who think something is too expensive and that’s absolutely fine. But I wanted to give a little perspective on what actually goes into my bakes.
Everything you see in the shed is completely handmade, hand decorated and hand packed by me. I’ve been baking for 7 years now, and over those years I’ve invested a huge amount of time, money and effort into improving my skills and the quality of what I make.
I used to be “cheaper” but eventually I realised just how little I was actually earning. Once I accounted for ingredients, packaging, electricity, equipment, time spent baking and decorating, cleaning, stocking the shed and all the other costs involved, there was very little left. At that point, it simply wasn’t sustainable. This job takes over my life & it would be much simpler having a conventional job run by somebody else.
This is my job, not just a hobby. I have to price my products so that the business can cover its costs, pay its taxes and actually pay me a wage for the many hours of work that go into it.
You honestly wouldn’t believe the amount of time and money that goes into producing everything you see in that little shed each week.
I will never be able to compete with supermarket prices. If you want a cheaper cake, there are plenty of supermarkets where you can buy one, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But handmade, small batch baking from an independent business is a completely different product.
You can easily spend £3–£4 on a small slice of mass-produced cake in a coffee shop, so I genuinely believe the prices I charge for fresh, handmade treats are fair.
I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who chooses to spend their hard earned money with my small business. Every purchase supports the hours of work that happen behind the scenes and allows me to keep doing something I’ve worked hard at for the last 7 years🫶🏼
You don’t have to agree with my prices, and you certainly don’t have to buy from me, but please remember there’s a real person and a huge amount of work behind every item in that shed🧁💕
Thanks,
