1. Apple Harvest Celebration at Erddig
Explore displays featuring more than 180 apple varieties, try apple-themed games, sample chutneys and jams, and visit the natural play area.
* When: Saturday and Sunday, 10am–5pm
* Travel: Around 25–30 minutes
* Cost: Activities are included with admission; family garden admission is £30 without Gift Aid, or £47.50 for the whole property. National Trust members and under-fives enter free
* Ages: Excellent for toddlers through to primary-school children

* Weather: Partly outdoors, so Saturday afternoon looks best. Comfortable footwear recommended

A relaxed morning of painting, drawing and creating with recycled and loose materials. Adults are encouraged to join in rather than simply supervise.

* Ages: All ages; children must be accompanied
* Booking: Drop-in, although reserving a place is sensible during busy sessions
* Weather: Fully indoors; wear clothes that can get messy

3. Disney’s Wish plus free crafts at Storyhouse
The U-rated film is an inexpensive cinema treat, followed by free drop-in activities in the children’s library.
* When: Saturday or Sunday; film at 10.30am, crafts noon–4pm
* Travel: Around 35–40 minutes to Chester
* Cost: Film £4 each; crafts free with all materials supplied
* Ages: Best for younger and primary-school grandchildren; family screenings require adults to attend with a child aged 15 or under
* Booking: Book the film; crafts require no booking
* Weather: Completely indoors

4. Coed Llandegla walk and café
Choose a short waymarked forest or reservoir walk, hunt for autumn leaves and finish with something in the café. It is the easiest option for a flexible few hours close to home.
* Travel: Approximately five minutes
* Open: Visitor centre 9am–5.30pm; hot food served until 3.30pm
* Cost: £8 for the car and driver, plus £2 per adult passenger; under-16 passengers free
* Ages: All ages if you choose a route suitable for the youngest walker
* Booking: None
* Weather: Saturday afternoon should be the most pleasant period
* Important: Forestry harvesting continues. The skills area, pump track, freeride area and running trails are closed; follow the marked walking routes and current diversions

5. Ruthin Craft Centre – stories and an ancient game
The new Stories We Tell exhibition contains seven imaginative window displays filled with unusual handmade characters and objects. You can also try the self-led “Game of Ur” activity.
* Travel: Around 20 minutes
* Open: Saturday and Sunday, 10am–5.30pm; activity space advertised until 5pm
* Cost: Free admission and free parking
* Ages: Best for curious primary-school children and older grandchildren; suitable for a shorter, quieter outing
* Effort: Level-access site with café, toilets and seating
* Weather: Mainly indoors and a reliable backup for either day

My pick: Erddig on Saturday afternoon for the fullest day out. For something inexpensive and weatherproof, combine Family Art Club at Tŷ Pawb with lunch in Wrexham.
