The Reader at Calderstones

The Reader at Calderstones Our headquarters, The Reader at Calderstones, is a community that has literature, art, heritage, wellbeing activities, food and fun at its heart.

It’s a place where everyone can come to find something real to take home at the end of the day. In 2014, The Reader signed a 125 year lease with Liverpool City Council with a view to developing the International Centre for Shared Reading in the historic Mansion House at Calderstones Park and establishing our Reader HQ and social enterprises in the old Coach House and Courtyard buildings. The build

ing will become a hub of Shared Reading and well-being in the beautiful, peaceful environment of Calderstones Park – a destination which will welcome visitors for the local community, the wider city of Liverpool, the UK and beyond. With new businesses, an expanded café and the restoration of the Neolithic Calder Stones from which the park takes it's name, The Reader are building a community which will provide opportunities for people to reach their full potential through employment, volunteering and training opportunities.

Shared Reading groups happen in all sorts of places including libraries, care homes, cafés, hospitals and prisons.

This month, we're reflecting on the positive impact of Shared Reading on mental health and wellbeing. Reviewing survey responses from mental health open community groups, we believe that Shared Reading is needed now more than ever to connect individuals, help us feel better and to rebuild lost social bonds.

The Reader Bookshelf is a carefully curated collection of literature for adults and children. This year’s theme ‘Wonder’ is about being bold, being curious and being open. Staff and volunteers around the country have selected 12 titles for adults which explore what 'Wonder' means to them.

We're delving into The Reader Bookshelf this month with a review of The Fat Lady Sings by by Jacqueline Roy from our Director of Literature, Katie Clark.

Next month, we're welcoming Jacqueline Roy herself to discuss the book and talk her latest novel In Memory of Us.

Calling all new parents: What better way to start 2025 than doing something for you?

Every Wednesday 10am-11.30am in the Old Café room, we'll create a relaxed space to spend some time reading grown-up stuff, with a little one in tow.

We'll choose the book or poem and read aloud above the noise and through the feeds. We are on the ground floor and there is space for prams, and baby changing facilities are close by.
